Default My fake plastic love

Below is a link to a disturbing, creepy and sad BBC documentary, that is also fascinating. It is about lonely men who own realistic sex dolls (made from silicone) and how they treat them as their girlfriends...

WARNING: This documentary is not appropriate viewing material for children or those who are easily offended. It is however a BBC documentary so gladly there's no footage of depraved sexual acts.

Once you've watched the multiple parted documentary, I recommend listening to the fantastic Radiohead track 'Fake Plastic Trees'...

Where was actually a movie on this subject called Lars and the Real Girl released a couple years ago. I've never seen the whole thing, but the parts I watched made it seem pretty watchable.

I remember hearing about that film but I had forgotten what it was called. Thanks for the reminder, I'll check it out in the next few days. I heard that it was surprisingly uplifting and non-judgemental.

These guys are so creepy. I mean I don't have any issues with people owning such a thing in general--if they want to spend that much money on what is essentially just a sex toy--but it's pretty disturbing in the cases where they start to treat it like a real person. "She's still sleeping." Yeah, no kidding pal, she hasn't developed sentience yet?

I totally agree. It's their right to do what they please as long as their not hurting anyone but I really feel that the 4k+ would have been better spent on extensive therapy. Also, the man saying "She's still sleeping" was funny and upsetting all at once.

Indeed. I stopped watching when the guy was giving his doll a foot massage. Really? Is she enjoying that?

I get more interaction from video game characters than that.

edit: okay, I did watch the rest of it. Really it's more sad than creepy.

I just surfed on over to the Realdoll website after watching the video. In addition to the dolls, they also sell ... just ... parts. Got a foot fetish? Good news! You can just buy feet.

Yuck.

That's actually a really good movie. Totally pays off.

Absolutely, the reason I used the word creepy is because it was bound to be what most people will think at first but I was sure to also use the word sad as well because my sympathies lie with these troubled individuals.

I and I'm sure many others can relate to what it feels like to be profoundly lonely and depressed, even if we may not understand the need to take things to such an extreme by projecting all your love upon an inanimate, silicone object.

Okay, that's it! If I ever win the lottery then I'm going to go all Dr. Frankenstein and s**t by building my very own monstrosity; with nine heads, seventeen arms, twenty-six legs, plus ninety-nine dongs and hoo-hoo's.

surely they cannot all be troubled?
I mean they can afford those things, they know what they want enough to be ok with buying it, and they have what they want.
Seems a more content, fulfilled lifestyle than many people.

So far I'm thinking about getting one, I started part two , it's on pause. I know how these guys feel. I'm a outsider, with interests in teleportation, invisibility, things of this nature that I wouldn't even want to share with other people let alone them share a interest in any of it...

Ya know, if it's a real experience, why not? Why not , seems like a fun imaginative thing to do for some one who's one of the crowd... And ya know, I used to seek out knowledge, etc etc, now I see all these things already exist. Science has made the world very easy to understand, and being creative and imagination now requires us to take to ourselves, self love, and expand our own horizons.

Because teleportation, invisibility cloak, time travel, are all very easy scientific concepts.

Our own fantasys and dreams are the last frontiers, joys, experiences of our lives. And they are all that truly matter. And there is nothing in this world that I value more than a imagination, creativity.

since when? I'm pretty sure most science will tell you that time travel is impossible. Maybe they are easy to fantasize about, and with the exception of the first two which I believe may one day be a reality, but the latter is most likely always going to be fantasy. Regardless these are all fantasy because they are not practical. Most peoples lives don't need any of these things. (except the teleporter, that would make things so easy.)

A guy can have a fake girlfriend, but there it is in the title "fake"... I will not pass any judgments here, but I'm pretty sure it would be more fulfilling for someone to find another actual human being to bond with. Women have ideas and thoughts, find one who agrees with yours, and build something real. I think people buy these dolls because they are longing for companionship of some kind, and just making up fake scenarios to try and give it some validity. It's dishonest, actually. These people are lying to themselves. How is that healthy? I believe in personal freedom, sure...but it's hard not to just shake your head and facepalm at this kind of shit.
