Default Paramount Adapts Penny Arcade's "New Kid"

So, yeah. This is pretty cool. It's based on this strip.

I just hope that Mike and Jerry doesn't get kicked out of the creative process. Also, I hope it doesn't turn into Mars Needs Moms.

....of their one-offs, this is honestly the very last one that I would have wanted to be made into a film. It works as a one-off joke, which if they have any sense they'll ape like hell in the trailer, but honestly I can't really see this as anything more than another dumb kid's film. Any of their other ones would be good, even Lookouts would work better as a kid's film, I think, but my preference would have been to go with making a film adaptation of Automata.

That's weird. How is there enough material to make a movie off of? Caaaause there's not :P

Well they both think it could be "the biggest thing [they] ever do", so I'll assume they've got more behind it than what you can see in the comic.

Oh, I'm sure, but "Major movie studio makes a film about a kid that doesn't quite fit in" doesn't really inspire confidence in me.

Yeah, Automata would be a better choice. Though, Automata would be better as a TV series in my opinion.

They can expand, you know. It's not just gonna be based on that one page, which would make a 30 second short film.

Anyhoo, when I saw the strip the first time a few months back, I thought it had some potential to be something bigger. So, regardless of what it might become in the end, I'm still excited.

New Kid seems like it could easily be made into a family film. While I've enjoyed all of their one-offs, that one seems the least inspired. I would like to see some more Automata or Lookouts. Also, I enjoyed Jim Darkmagic and Sand and still want those to be expanded upon. Belruel is a pretty strip but there's not enough there yet to get excited about

http://www.hulu.com/total-recall-2070 Cop drama in the Blade Runner universe. It's a bit campy but overall it works surprisingly well. Worth watching at least the first few episodes to get a sense of how an Automata show might work. It lacks the actual 1920s vibe, but otherwise it has a lot of the same film noir and racism-against-robots motifs.

Never watched Blade Runner, and I know I should. I thought Automata was kinda like I, Robot. (The movie. I don't know about the books, because I haven't read them yet).

I can see where you're coming from, but it's a different sort of feel from that. Imagine if nobody trusted the robots, as opposed to relying on them, and I think you'd be closer to the feel of Automata.

I think Sand would have been a better choice.

If The Space Sphere were here, he'd agree with you. Or if he'd at least tell me the password to that account...
