Default UPDATE: Sam & Max Comico production art circa '89

Did anybody catch wind of these pieces that were on ebay recently?

It seems that somebody bought a giant storage locker worth of production artwork from the long gone Comico. Of course, Comico was responsible for the great Road Trip comic that led into Hit the Road.

http://www.comicoart.com/2011/03/com...aved-from.html

There are still some pieces listed on ebay. These are coolest ones I saw but are now ended. Not original artwork, although how many of us would go into hock to hang this stuff on a wall?

This is a spiffy look at the 4-color separation technique that Comico developed back in the 80's:

Road Trip sure looks cool in full color versus the black & white in the collected version. All 40 pages of the comic were up for grabs.

Several of the auctions talk about "Gordon Purcell"... But interesting stuff. I'd never seen the left half of this one before.

I think that would be the editorial page inside of the Comico Special #1. I don't have a copy of that one anymore to check. I wonder, was that comic printed in color like those color separations? I know that Surfin' the Highway and Collected Sam & Max were both black & white.

That's what the description says, yes. You can actually read the editorial in the bigger picture. Funny stuff.

About the color thing: I've had to do some looking up and discard some assumptions, but your answer is yes. Most important reference: the old comicography.
(Bit sad that I couldn't find this detail in the wiki, but I've added a mention now.)

I think my research will involve getting some copies of the original comics again. I used to have 3 out of 4 of the old comics but gave them to my brother. Shouldn't be too hard too find a willing seller in this economy.

Default UPDATE: A little haggling goes a long way...

I went ahead and phoned the shop in the article who bought the entire Comico lot this year, and turns out they are a swell bunch of fellows and were happy to make a deal outside of ebay for some of these pieces!

None of them had sold yet, so we haggled over price, I sold some of my children, and POOF! here's what arrived this week:

Inventory Sheet dates from DEC '88:

10 x Road Trip 4-color separation quad panels:

Comico Special cover separation, negatives, and editorial page layout:

I was surprised at how good the condition of everything is, no yellowing from age despite being +20 years old.

This cover page is what really got me interested in the end. But before I post my latest bank statement for what it cost, the question is how many bags of cats would you throw down for this piece?
(Current exchange rate: $1 = 1 bag of cats)

That is amazing, I was watching a lot of that stuff on Ebay, but unfortunately I have no budget for anything outside of bills nowadays, though I did manage to get a hold of the 4 original issues of the comic, and it's a beautiful addition to my collection. You're a very lucky person to be in possession of those, and if I didn't need them, I'd probably sell an arm or a leg to pay for things like that. If it's not too much info, what price did you manage to get those for?

What??? Kiss and tell without getting some?

I didn't pay nearly as much what they were originally asking on ebay, but I'm curious what anybody else thinks the lot is worth first...

Honestly, I'd say for what you got, I'd easily justify myself spending between 200-400. That's just what I would allow myself to work with, budget wise. Whether you got them for more or less is not all that important, and you don't need to divulge that information, the fact is, you've got your hands on a lot of things that are once in a lifetime finds.
Kudos.

I don't have a scanner near that big, and in a sense, everyone has seen these pieces before in the form of the original comics or in the collected version.

But someday down the road I will have to get some good images uploaded to the S & M wiki or some such place...

Glad you were happy with the pieces. We still have a few more and I'm still looking through the rest of what we got for the missing negatives. I'm sure they are in the stack somewhere.

By the way, the original comic was in color, just like the pages above. Only the collected edition was in B&W.

Thanks for contacting us originally,
