Episode 1 plant chopping no key response

Right after leaving the docks you have to chop away vegetation. Although I press the right keyboard key (asdw or arrow) according to the icon appearing, I only get red crosses and hence I'm stuck. The same principle did work in the very first scene of the game.
I see no apparent slowdown/lag of the game.

I've tried without effect:
-Lowering the display settings to 1024x768 with all low/off
-Plug in a regular PS2 connected keyboard instead of a USB one

Some system specs:
AMD Phenom X6 1090T processor
AMD Radeon 6700 Series video card
ASUS Sabretooth motherboard

Suggestions to solve this are highly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure you misunderstood it like I did.
You have to wait until the outer circles reach the middle of the symbol (arrows).
If you press the button too early, you'll get the red crosses.

I ran into the same problem on the Bone Shaker level when you have to haveJess break the power station window with a rock. I kept pushing the button furiously as soon as I saw the prompt appear so that I wouldn't miss it, and couldn't understand why I kept failing. I finally figured out you have to wait until the circles match up.

A really weird design choice those buttons tricks you into making urgent button prompts.
