Puzzle Agent 2 (Steam) crashing immediately upon start

So my new copy of Puzzle Agent 2 is crashing immediately upon starting the game. I hear perhaps 2 chords of guitar IF LUCKY. I've googled solutions (the only one I've seen involves changing compatibilities in Windows, which doesn't work), I've checked video drivers, Direct X... tried restarting... I'm at a loss here and VERY disappointed. I loved the first PA and am anxious to play more! Here's my dxdiag since it seems like it is often asked for in these forums:

Thanks for the link to the new sound driver, I hadn't thought about that at all, I don't recall ever updating it actually. Regarding USB devices, the only one I had plugged in at the time was my mouse.

Installing new driver now, I'll edit with the results if it fixes the issue.

Edit: Nope, no dice. Same result even after a reboot for the driver install. I even tried running it with my mouse unplugged. Telltale Screen -> Grickle Image -> begins to load main menu and then the program stops responding. Sometimes it gets a little further in loading, based on the audio, but only by a second or so. If it helps, it does try running the game at a resolution far smaller than the native one I run at (1920x1200).

I see, so the Wacom device probably is your notebooks touchpad.

First i would try verifying the game cache files.

You could try if pressing Alt-Enter while the episode starts, to switch it to windowed mode, helps.

If none of that helps, please try running the episode during a clean boot:

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
4. Select the Services tab
5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
6. Click Disable all
7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
8. Click on OK
9. Click Restart.
10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
3. Click Ok
4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer
