Favourite? Probably Tom Petty. Suck on it. Best? Not even close.

Best or greatest is a bit subjective. Some people would immediately list the style innovators, others, the imaginative, the technical, the fast, the perfect. There are guitarists that have taken years worth of advanced technique and variant style classes who can play all sorts of riffs that make you want to throw your guitar away they seem so impossible. Why aren't they mentioned? Because they didn't change anything? They aren't doing anything new? Excellent tracers? Does personality come into play? So many factors that can affect people's decisions. Personally, I'm not going to argue anyone's choices. Even though I hate Eddie(Van Halen) as a person and think he has the personality of plywood. :P

Derek Trucks, nephew of the Allman Brother’s drummer, plays a pretty damn good slide guitar.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Pat Metheny yet, but maybe he's not as well known as I thought.

I'm always drawn to more quirky & tasteful players like Lindsey Buckingham.

You can't deny the man has mad skills:

I was at the Cafe Wha? in Manhatten the night Van Halen was there. What an awesome experience.

Gary Clark Jr. just put out a new album. Some of it is good, while the rest of it sucks.

I just recently got into Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore, even though I hate the fact that i’m Irish.

Apologies for the necro, but

R.I.P. Jeff Hanneman (Slayer).

49! What a waste.

Lindsey Buckingham is one of my favorites, too.

I'm also a fan of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (formerly of The Mars Volta), and both Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever (of Coheed & Cambria).

When you consider how influential Slayer have been over the years, and then consider just how much of their best music was written by him, it really gives you a scope of just how big of a loss this is.

Very sad to see him go. It hurts to lose him, not only because he's a human being and an icon, but because thrash metal will probably never quite be the same without his presence.
