Just seen it. Hopes are mildly high, held back only by my natural cynicism.

Seems like a fair assessment. Just as long as it's not as god awful as '2 Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps... in Space' series VIII, I'll be reasonably happy.

Oh man Craig Charles is looking old. But the show's looking good, the sets look vintage!

Hey now, VIII had some great bits of comedy in it, but the plots let it down. And you have to admit that the whole show started off as "The Odd Couple in Space".... I always think the funniest bits are the long sequences of dialogue between characters, especially Lister & Rimmer.

It is a pity that Back to Earth was such a disappointment. On rewatching it, I have seen some parts that could have been great, but I think the lack of an audience meant too many jokes fell flat due to either poor dialogue or poor delivery. This also was a failing (in part) of VII, although that definitely had some good scripts in it. I think X may do better, returning to a live audience.

Hmm, personally I've always admired 'Red Dwarf' for its science-fiction elements above the broader sexual gags presented by Doug Naylor, following his split from Rob Grant. This most likely explains why I love series VII and 'Back to Earth', yet despise series VIII.

It's quite amusing that Lister has sent himself his own Father's Day card!

So... what did you guys think of the first episode?

I liked it. It gave me some good laughs near the end especially.

The shopping channel gag was the highlight for me! XD
If the series is like that first episode then I would be pretty happy with the series.

Mostly OK, with a few moments of greatness. Definitely better than Back to Earth, so yeah, worth checking out.

(Thanks for resurrecting the thread - I'd have done it myself if you hadn't!)

I was pleasantly surprised all round, after a few jarring moments at the very start while I was getting used to the aging of the actors, particularly their voices, (I'm super weird about voices btw) the new sets and a few flat jokes, it relaxed into what was pretty much classic Dwarf.

Let's hope it keeps up!

There are times when repetition is hilarious. This episode had two of those moments.

Oh yeah, it was also well written, and while not all jokes were funny the majority were. I'm happy.

Is it me, or did the background music when Rimmer's brother was dying sound like the Arnold Rimmer song?

I didn't notice it particularly, but it would make sense.

Upon another watch, that's exactly what it was.

Yeah the music's great! Loads of clever wee motifs and curiosities in there. Glad to see they've got Howard Goodall on board, he's magic!

I always thought the music of Red Dwarf always carried a lot of the dramatic weight of the situation and was really key in making episodes feel important and earnest, even though they're really fun comedy romps!

Also, am I the only one who thought that the ending to Back to Earth was kinda smart in its own bonkers way, strip away the fan service and it's a really good Red Dwarf plot.
