Question I need some help here, having messed up dreams.

Hey guys, normally I don’t tend to ask help on the forums but today is an exception because there are two things that have been bothering the hell out of me for a long time. Ive tried ignoring them, but they have reached a point where I have decided to turn to not only for help from my online friends, but also to the community. I’ll sort it out.

For the past couple of days now, I haven’t been sleeping well. I have been having some pretty messed up nightmares lately. If anyone asks, this has been going for on about 2-4 weeks from now. I have no idea why I am having some of the craziest dreams. Most of them have been pretty messed up. More messed up than anything crazy from Japan, these dreams I am having are on the borderlines from nightmare fuel to high octane nightmare fuel. What the hell can I do to not have anymore messed up dreams? Its driving me crazy and im not even getting much sleep at night.

Well the first answer is possible demon affliction. May want to consult an exorcist.

Second of all, assess your bedtime scenario. Are you getting to bed before midnight? Are you sleeping with all light sources off? Are you reducing stress and allowing a calm environment before you head to sleep? Remember, light sources should progressively be turned off over a few hours time leading to bedtime, otherwise your body's circadian rhythm is caught in a juxtaposition of day and night sleeping. Don't consume caffeine and don't eat three hours before bedtime.

^ To answer your questions. I have been getting to bed around 9-10 pm. I usually have myself a glass of cold chocolate milk before I brush my teeth and call it a night. All the lights are off and I usually do about 10 minutes of breathing mediation before I head to sleep. Does that answer your questions dude?

So you are not playing Weena Morloch while you sleep. That rules out the reason I have nightmares then.

Has something stressful or traumatic happened to you recently?

Have you been taking any type of medication? I don't mean to pry, but I've heard certain types of antidepressants or other medication could cause nightmares. (Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, please consult your local physician for details.)

I am not playing any messed up video games before I go to sleep. Nor do I watch horror movies before sleeping either.

As for stressful encounters, here are a few. There is this one stalker who wont stop calling and txting the hell out of me. Most of the things that my parents do makes me question why the hell I am their son since most of the acts they do annoy the hell out of me. One of which is that my mother asks my father to do an average chore(like empty the strainer) and he asks me to empty the strainer. When clearly his damned wife asked him to do it, lazy bastard. I have to tolerate whenever the hell my nephew and niece come over because thats when the few times when my parents go from smart to stupid whenever they are babysitting the litter of brats that my dickheaded brother and his hippied wife produced.

Also, I got dumped by my girlfriend who I later found out she was dating a guy who was trying to get himself into the porn industry. How traumatizing is that for you?

If you drink alot of sugar before going to sleep it has been approved by research it helps fuel your brain to get into the phase of REM.

Also as a psychologist it would help for you to remember that it is you who can control dream and not dreams control you. You can create a step by step plan on ways of reminding you in your sleep that you are in fact dreaming. If you feel this is a problem that has been disrupting you and affecting you in your daily life activities, you should consider going to a therapist. Or you can choose a better option on going on a sleep clinic and try to have yourself checked out.

REM has been linked with helping memory.

NOW GET IN THERE AND KICK THAT DREAMS ASS!! XD

Seriously, I get bad dreams sometimes. I try to turn them into silly dreams. Make them ridiculous. Sometimes it works.

The only dreams I am completely helpless against are dramatic dreams (that make me sob in my sleep), and ... *ahem* "raunchy" dreams. (They both tend to hit me with an unassuming Roleplay, and I drop my guard, then BAM! They take control!)

(I'm just glad I don't really dream all that much! XD)

From your tone, you sound angry. You may want to analyze that as a component behind your dreams and consider a healthier emotional response to your surroundings. That may in turn lead to better dreams.

You'll be fine, OP. Things could be far worse, especially in regards to your ex. Cherish the time you had together, but don't let it traumatize you. Just think of it a a new phase in your life.

"Add a dab of lavender to milk; leave town with an orange, and pretend you're laughing at it."

Seriously though... similar to others here, I think that sorting out the life stress is a good place to start. When I'm dealing with real-world stressful situations it tends to get into my dreams too (if I can even get to sleep in the first place).

Block his/her number, or get a new one yourself. You don't have to put up with that stuff.

This is pretty much what being young is about.

Not much to help there, besides looking forward to the day you can move out. Instead of letting the current situation get to you, try to use it as motivation to work hard at school/job/whatever so you can change it.

Figure out some strategies for these situations. E.g. stay out of their way as much as possible (even go to a friend's place or something), and just show up for the obligatory family meal.

Try not having the milk for a few nights and see if it makes a difference.

I'm totally going to get flamed or trolled for saying this, but as a Christian, I seriously recommend prayng about it. Ask God to help you. Ask Him to watch over and protect you. Ask Him to send His angels to watch over and protect you. Just be be yourself and come right out and talk to Him about what you've got going on and ask Him to take care of you and be with you through it. Just talk to Him, He'll listen... and He'll respond.

Seriously, it works. No joke.

You’re not the only one.

When I get nightmares, drink a couple cups of milk and down slices of toast. I sleep like a baby afterwards.

If that doesn’t work for you, just remember whatever you see in your dreams can’t hurt you. Just know they aren’t real. Unless those nightmare involved a guy with a burnt-ass face.

Try plain milk before bed instead of chocolate milk, or just a glass of water. Vitamin B6 also sometimes messes up your dreams if you have too much of that late at night. I generally don't eat/drink anything but water within two hours before bedtime.

Realize some things you just have to cope with as long as you live with your parents, but that hopefully won't be forever.

Block the stalker as much as possible and do not respond to him/her. If he/she escalates to the point where you should call the police, then do that, and get a restraining order.

Burn some incense, meditate, and calm yourself. Look into learning how to lucid dream, if the problem persists.

If all else fails, sacrifice three goats to Baldur and stay awake for three nights. Become nocturnal. Boil an egg in a sheep's stomach and wear an onion on your belt. Seek no further treatment.

It came so natural to me I didn't know people had to learn how to lucid dream.
