If they could then their previous attack would've succeeded. From what I remember there were 4 bandits holding your group hostage, and then 6 in the second wave, with more firing at you from further away out of which Lilly killed 1, Carley 2, Lee 5, and a walker got 1 before your group leaves, and this was despite the bandit attack being a complete surprise, thanks to Ben. As for armaments, the bandits had handguns, crossbows, and I think I saw one with a shotgun, while Lee's group had handguns and scoped rifles, so no real advantage or disadvantage in the actual fight, but your group's weapons should perform better if the group is prepared and fighting from a fortified position which would be the case if not for Ben.
IMO, though, the best proof for believing that the bandits didn't have the numbers or firepower to take the motel is that they did try before and failed. I'm not saying that staying there was worth the risk from bandits or lack of supplies, but the group would've been far better off if Ben acted like a real member of the group and talked to everyone else or at least Lee after his first contact with the bandits than trying to keep a deal going behind everyone's back. Hell, the group would've been way better off if Ben was never found, which is why I wouldn't keep him around.
