That was Jolene's daughter, who was implied to have been kidnapped by the Save-Lots bandits, then given to the St. Johns to be cannibalized if I remember correctly. Something was also said that they were rapist monsters (the bandits) so it's likely that Jolene, her daughter, or both were raped. Or something. It's been a while since I played Episode 2.

If you ask her what happened to her, she will tell you that her little daughter was abducted by the bandits and taken into the forest where they presumably raped and killed her. This drove Jolene (understandable) insane where she personified her love for her murdered daughter in Clementine and believed she rightfully belonged to her as she was once a loving mother.
She killed the bandits, the same ones who took her daughter, that were using the camp she was found in and used it for herself, though it appears that the leader of the bandits and his followers ransacked the camp, took anything of value, and raped her. All this made Jolene lose all will to live except for the idea that she might be able to care for another little girl, so she stole the hat as a reminder of her last will to live. I think it's important to note that we have no idea if Jolene's daughter was killed.
As far as we know she might still be alive, and the guys who kidnapped her are the same ones behind Clementine's kidnapping on episode 4. |
