Following Kirkman's version of zombies (or Romero's, I don't know, please correct me if I'm wrong) animals are not affected by the virus or whatever causes it. When they die, they stay dead.

I think the animals are unaffected, simply because we haven't seen a single zombie animal. There are sheeeeetloads of animals everywhere and a lot of them die every day, if this affected animals, I'm sure we would've seen at least one zombified pet by now.

And we don't really much know about the virus and which areas of the brain (or whatever else) does it affect. All we know is that it's largely spread trough no significant contact, so most likely it's airborne or... maybe waterborne.

Well, there are plenty of diseases that don't transfer between animals and humans already, so I don't find it surprising that it doesn't happen in TWD universe.

Bites will probably kill animals, but Kirkman stated that only humans become walkers in his universe.

I think we can assume no zombie animals because of the group hunting birds and rabbits in ep 2. This virus only affects the human brain it looks like.

So only humans, no chimps, bonobos or any other member of the hominidae?

If you catch a cold.. you can cough in your dogs face all day long.. and the only thing that will happen is your dog will think you're an asshole and probably poop on your pillow.

I am guessing this is one of those things like that do not infect animals like it does humans.

Actually I'm pretty sure animals DO turn.
I got no idea how it works but I recall:

[Comic book spoilers]

One of the twins killing cats and thinking it's okay cause they come back anyway
[End spoilers]
