TL;DR: So he didn't die, yet. There's the answer to this thread.
I think nobody would have had an issue with Lee dying in another season, but he didn't even last as long as some annoying secondary character in the comic books! Just imagine Rick getting bit in the 4th comic and dying in the 5th and all the following episodes are all about his not-so-cool kid. That dies in issue #10 only to be replaced by somebody else, who ends up dead 5 issues later, only to be replaced by....I think you got the point. Would be kinda lame, wouldn't it?
While you can't really compare Rick and Lee, since it's way easier to get attached to the protagonist that you actually embody in a computer game, rather than identifying yourself with some dude in a comic or a TV series, you'd be pretty pissed too, if the author decides to kill the main character in a somewhat lame way. It's just way too obvious that they only sacrificed Lee in order to make the ending more emotional...and this is just dumb.
Lee was one of the most interesting and awesome characters in the past 10 years of video game protagonists and I think a lot of people would have loved him to survive fudgin' season 1. A shame TTG dumped him on the very first occasion, like sacrificing a lamb or a pawn only to force the story into an emotional ending. I don't know about you, but I am certainly not looking forward to playing a 9 years old girl in any episode whatsoever...or some random silhouette who happens to bump into her. Unless that silhouette is Lee Everett.
