Default Chapter 4 choice causes NPCs to behave inconsistently? *spoiler, obviously*

So, toward the end of Chapter 4, after returning from Crawford, when Vernon pulled me aside for a chat... he started acting really weird.

When I met Vernon's group in the sewer, I diffused the situation as passively as possible. I made a point of it, not to make any threats or tell any lies to the group, as I did not feel there would be any benefit from any of that. The ONLY thing I told him that wasn't true was that Clementine was my daughter. I felt that was of no consequence and was irrelevant as that is how I treated her.

Anyway, when he pulled me aside he said things like, "You have no sympathy for others.", "Look what you did to get me to come here." and "I don't like being threatened."

I'm sitting here like, "what the fuck?" I definitely did NOT threaten him.

Did my one choice to refer to Clementine as my daughter cause this? I figured the game may have just glitched and registered me as having chosen to threaten Vernon's group. However, I'm now seeing the statistics page at the end of chapter 4 and one of the statistics is:
Hippocratic Oath
Did you lie or threaten Vernon?

Now, admittedly, I did tell a small lie, but certainly nothing that warrants his behavior toward the end of the chapter. Accusing me of not caring about others, even after I chose to rescue Ben.

Did this one small lie cause the game to register me as "hostile" or did the game actually glitch and give me the wrong NPC script?

I found that a little weird also. I told him the truth for everything, and was never hostile to him. Yet he said I didn't care about anyone and that I was not a safe care taker. I mean sure, I did get Clementine into some situations, but we're trying what's best for her. Nobody can protect someone 100%. Trial and error. He seems to hate you no matter what.

no, in my play i said i was sorry about brie. he just said "dont beat yourself over it, there was nothing you couldve done and the worst part is that he doesnt feel bad about it" or something along those lines. and then he says something like " i know you care for clementine and i know you want whats best for her but the idea of the boat with no destinaton isnt the best idea" and then he offers. and then he says most of the invalids had kids of thier own so she would be safer with them than with lee.

If you say Clem is your daughter he treats you the same way as if you threatened him, was that what you did?

Yea. Kind of an oversight on the devs part. Makes him behave completely irrationally.

Maybe it's supposed to mean that he thinks you said she's your daughter for the sole purpose of convincing him to lead you out of the sewers, which would be kind of a jerk move. If Clementine wasn't there and Duck was and you could say Duck was your kid, for example. It does seem odd though.

I saw Vernon say "if you were her real father we wouldn't be having this conversation, but you're not, are you? Just another one of your lies." Did you get this line?
