In episode 1 why did lee rip himself out of the family picture?

Because the group was staying in the drug store with him, and given his past as a muderer, if anyone knew that the owner's son killed anyone, and they saw Lee in the picture, then everyone else would know as well. But Lee may have also felt that he let his family down by killing the senator, and thought that he wasn't really a part of the family anymore, so he separated himself from them in the picture.

Yeah i agree, i got a feeling like he didnt deserve to be in the picture with them or that he wasnt part of the family Anymore since his crime. Thanks!

Lee said he hadn't seen his family in a long time. Plus, when you looked at the pictures displayed in the drugstore, there were some with Lee's parents and brother, but I'm pretty certain none of them with Lee. So I believe he didn't feel like he was part of the family anymore.

I don't think Lee was very comfortable talking about his family, either, and probably didn't want to have to explain the story to everyone.

I think it was a combination of two things.

The first is that he didn't want the rest of the group to figure out who he was, and that he was a convicted murderer. They could potentially cast him out of the group over it, which could make his (and Clem's) situation a lot more precarious.

The second is that he was ashamed of what he had done and the hurt it had causes his family. The murder seemed to have caused a rift between Lee and his family, as Lee can mention to Clem that they hadn't spoken in awhile. He also clearly regrets this. Tearing himself out of the family photo was as much an expression of shame and anger over what he had done, as it was an act of self preservation.

After you see Lee's brother trapped on the other side of the street, Doug wants you to get proof that he works in the pharmacy.. Obviously Lee can't tell him that it's his brother, so when he gets back with the family photo, he wont notice Lee in it.

The photo can be picked up torn long before Lee knows he needs it to convince Doug to go outside however, so in many cases I don't think his motivation had anything to do with Doug.

In fact since most people go into the backroom before stepping outside with Doug, its a safe bet that most peoples' Lee picked up the photo before Lee knew that his brother was a walker, and was trapped outside with the key.

Lee's line right after he picks it up to Carley is "It's a photo of the family that owned the place. It might help us track down the keys"
