Larry. With him, Lilly wouldn't have turned to a psycho broken down rage-filled emotional mess, and likely would not have snapped and killed Carley. He also could have intervened in the bandit raid in episode 3, potentially shooting/killing/distracting the walker that bit Duck, saving him and Katjaa. Kenny would likely die, because the state the world is in and the situations he and his family get into, he would probably end up sacrificing himself to save them, especially after losing the boat, since they'd be his only focus.
Who knows, maybe saving the violent old man saves the lives of everyone else...

This is the walking dead based on the comic universe. The same universe where
a man can get trapped in a gym with 100% guaranteed no way out with several walkers and slay them all. As much as anyone wants to believe him dead, that event proves that there is a chance, however slim.
Nothing can change that(save an official statement/season 2 explanation).
