he was. you are most likely talking about his TV appearance.
I am talking about his original character in the comics. he seems more optimistic, funnier and in general more humorous in the original. doesn't make much difference either way whether you use the original or not, he is/was one of the most reliable and useful characters in the entire franchise.

I am talking about Comic Glenn, and I'm not disagreeing with that, I'm just saying that I got the vibe that he was depressed around this time in TWD before meeting Maggie.

Glenn would likely be alive by the end of Episode 5 considering he's, in my opinion, the most adept survivor of anyone in the series as well as the most resourceful Yep, I've read the comic through Issue 100. He would have likely been with Lee much more than Kenny since Glenn has always been the guy to go into towns for supplies.

Rick would likely be dead, having never found Glenn and never found a way out of Atlanta safely. Everyone else in his group would probably be dead too since they would have either stuck with Shane who was never going to leave the camp outside Atlanta and froze to death or would have been attacked again and been all killed, or split up into smaller groups and died individually.
