You have three saves to begin with, and they will accompany you through the entire game (that means: You could be in episode 3, chapter 22 with the first save while the second is still at episode 1, chapter 8 and so forth). Every save slot represents one of your stories, so to speak. I don't know where you are with your save slots, but you can start episode 2 with every slot in which you've completed chapter 8 of episode 1 (i.e. in which you've finished episode 1).
If you want to know which of your save slots have a "finished" episode one, there is a way:

Yup, this works. The savegames are located in the folder "The Walking Dead" under "Telltale Games" in your "Documents" folder. Make a copy of the entire folder and store them elsewhere. Not the most elegant solution, but it works. Just make sure it's
the entire folder you copy, not just the save files. You have to include the "SyncFs" folder and prefs file as well. That's how it worked for me today...

The "previously on the walking dead" feature seems to be implemented. Jake has recently answered the question if starting with episode 2 is possible and has explained about default story developments you're starting out with if you choose to do so. In his answer, he has mentioned such a summing-up for episode 1 choices at the beginning of episode 2 which should also hold true for those who have actually played episode 1:
