Well, considering I've been using this username since the mid 90's, this feels a bit awkward. Like this is some sort of destined forum battle. Okay, here goes!

Wow. And here I thought this was the appreciation thread.

Dang, I mean, call me a noob (as far as this fandom goes, I am), but I was introduced to the first game with Dom's full voice-over on the Xbox 360. Since then, I've played the whole series, and I absolutely love how this guy portrays the character overall.

To me, Dominic Armato is the guy who gave Guybrush that whole "Sokka, only more naive and that's saying something" personality. Honestly, I thought Guybrush's "jerk" phase in MI2 came through perfectly, and it made it all the more hilarious.

I know you're saying you don't like the portrayal due to how you saw the emotions... And, well, that's one thing written text has over voice acting admittedly. You get to make up your own mind on how the character says the lines. But really, ever consider that how you saw that scene wasn't how the devs saw it? That maybe the actor *was* chosen for the role?

Just a thought.

As for the rest of you:

I found myself ad-libbing "no, don't, please" with "throw me into that briar patch". LOL That line was just hilarious.

I totally agree with you, Polychrome.

The first MI game I played was the Curse of Monkey Island, and one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much was Guybrush's voice. It was so natural that it was easy for me to empathise with the character. When I played the frist two MI games after that, although I enjoyed them, I felt something missing and that was Dominic/Guybrush's voice.

I fullly agree, Dominic IS Guybrush and he's awesome! I fondly remember MI2 back in the day, no voice and now, with the whole Special Edition makeover AND the new dubs, it almost feels like a new game, but with the same amazing, awesome feel! I mean, they just flat out triumphed and made me fall in love with this game all over again! I hope they do the same great work with CMI, MI4 and Grim Fandango! I wonder, would they be able to find the guy that did Manny Calavera's voice and have him do it again (well, I suppose they wouldn't have to since all they'd really need to do is improve the graphics just a bit).

Anyway, again, Dom rules and I hope they do more and more Monkey Island!

I came into the series on CMI myself, and I have to say it was the voice work which really drew me in. Earl, Alexandra and Dominic were absolutely outstanding, and I very much felt their absence when I backtracked to the first two games.

Dominic's voice to me just encapsulates what makes Guybrush a memorable character. He's such a hapless everyguy, yet there's so much confidence when he introduces himself as a mighty pirate and I think Dom gets that across spot on.

Trusting a 'loth is a lot like keeping a snake for a pet. It's not a matter of 'if' you're going to be bitten, but a matter of 'when'.

Well put. I agree with everything that you have said here, and I experienced the very same thing. When playing Secret and 'Revenge', I was hearing the voices from 'Curse', as I too was introduced to the series with 'Curse'. And, yes, Dom's portrayal and take on the character of Guybrush is perfect - he is the voice of Guybrush.

He looks like a nice guy in real life, but for all we know he's a jerk like so many other jerks in this world.

Actually, I've watched, read and heard multiple interviews with him and he actually seems like a really nice, down-to-earth guy.
