Beat me to it Pale Man. But yeh, maybe this is something they will consider. From what I understand in my interview with the guy who did the videos, it wouldn't really work with Secret Of Monkey Island because the backgrounds were such a low resolution. LeChucks Revenge on the other hand...

It's true that they couldn't have used the original background for SoMI:SE but that doesn't mean they couldn't have stayed 100% true to the original. These SE's require direct translation not reinterpretation, and this Super-Uber edition is exactly how it should be done!

The original MI2 doesn't need much memory, so they could kind of run it "in the background" and make sure that what you do in the new version is translated into the original, so we can switch any time. And it would mean that we would be able to get the new sound in the original. Of course, they could just take snapshots of all the 3d scenes and overlap them SMI:SE style.

This is exactly the form of purism I can't stand. While I love what this guy has done with MI2 in remaining true to the originals, I see absolutely no reason why MI:SE shouldn't be able to interpret the visuals. Sure, arguably some of these experiments may have been failures (though not nearly as many as some people would like to arguie) but I fail to see what's so wrong about, for example, adding those ships to the dock behind the Scumm Bar, and the idea that 'if it's not in the original game, don't put it in' is purism gone way too far, and the best way to stifle any potential creativity in the translations.

I thought MI:SE was very faithful and this fan mockup of MI2 even more so, but even 3d mock ups add things- take the light streaming through the window, for example - that's completely new, should that be taken out?

Totally. That streaming window light raped my childhood and ruined MI for me forever. Thanks a lot, Guy.brush. [burning Dial-A-Pirate and Mix-N-Mojo codewheels]

I'd really like to see what this guy could do with CMI's art.

This guy simply has the objective, indisputable best way to do these remakes. No debate.

I think there's some room for debate when you start thinking about having characters walking around in that style of world. If the remake uses 3D characters, people will complain, because they won't look as much like the original sprites. If they use 2D characters walking around in the 3D world, it'll have a jarring "Paper Mario" look.

So while these backgrounds do look awesome, I don't think they're a definitive answer because they only cover half the equation.

It's what was left out that bothers me the most other than the redesigns of the characters. For example when you encounter the monkey on monkey island, you can't examine him like you can in the original game. When you did he would say, "He looks hungry," or "He still looks hungry." It doesn't sound like much but these were contextual clues that were there to help. The new hint system is just lazy.

Then there's LeChuck. He doesn't even look like a ghost anymore, he looks like a zombie with ghost hands. He and all his crew are supposed to be transparent, it's even mentioned in the dialog. Then there's the tragic loss of Bob's awesome Skull Beard™. Not to mention the destruction of the awesome monkey animations that Steve did.

A lot of the backgrounds in general were messed up, for example the aging done on all the ships at Stan's. Stan's personal ship and the red one at the end of the dock are supposed to look prestine, they're the best on the lot. Heck all of them are supposed to look decent except for the one Guybrush actually buys. Now the joke about it being barely sea-worthy is hurt by the fact that all the ships are rotting. I can go on... =P

Hmmm.. You gain the respect of a huge fan base, the original artist of the artwork involved and the owner and publisher of the said game, with frankly, some of the best 3d imaging i've ever seen. this fella is one smart cookie!

Probably the secend best piece of 3d artwork i've ever seen!

they could find a way. the sample guybrushes in these videos looks great. i'm betting a nice 3D model with tasteful cell shading would probably work
