Default Escape from Monkey Island

First off -- yes, I know TellTale doesn't make EMI. I also know it barely deserves to be called Monkey Island. But I figured there may be some people on here who have played it.

I bought this game when it came out, but due to a lack of a PC at the time, I never played it. I now have a PC dual-booting Linux and Windows 7, and I want to play EMI. When I tried, I seem to run into various failures, the most common of which is being told the game can't find the files it needs to load, or that it doesn't see the CD in the drive. Installing generally works fine; these problems occur when attempting to actually play the game.

I've tried this:
- in Windows 7, admin mode enabled, winxp and win98 compatibility modes enabled
- In "Virtual Windows XP" mode in Windows 7
- In "Virtual Windows XP" mode with Monkey.exe and Monkey4.exe set to "Windows 98" compatibility mode INSIDE the XP VM
- In Wine under Fedora 11

Help!

Haven't tried it yet myself, and don't know how compatible it is with Windows 7, but methinks you need this.

EDIT: My bad, scratch that. It appears that EMI is not yet supported in Residual, they're trying to finish Grim Fandango first. Basically, it's SCUMMVM for Grim and EMI's engine.

The game is not compatible with 64-bit Windows, which I assume Windows 7 is? It won't run on Vista64 either.

However, there's a fan-made launcher out there somewhere that makes it compatible with 64bit. Try searching for EMI Launcher or something like that - I'd give it to you but I'm on a different computer and my own PC is something like 70 km away.

I haven't played EMI for years but when I was running it on my XP computer I had to install a patch from the LucasArts website for the game before I could play it.

I haven't tried it (I have the PS2 version of EMI) but the fan launcher StarEye mentioned can be found somewhere on this website.

I don't think I have ever had to use any compatibility mode at all. Try turning off all compatibility mode settings and then install the patch update from LucasArts and try running the game:

Didn't work in 64-bit Windows 7. This did, however, work with the release candidate of "Virtual Windows XP" (which is basically XP in a VirtualPC VM).

I ran into another problem there -- it wasn't able to start in DirectX mode (maybe I need to install 100 DirectX versions on top of XP?)

It did start in OpenGL mode, and I was able to view the intro. After the intro, however, it went dark. Sound effects continued, but nothing was being displayed anymore.

Update: I installed it in Windows Vista SP2 using the updated installer two people suggested above. It didn't work on Windows 7 RC, but it did on Windows Vista.

I just made it to Lucre Island. I've actually NEVER played this game before, and I've avoided watching walkthroughs so as to not rob myself of the fun.

Thanks for the tips everybody.

Thumbs up Will run in Windows 7

Download and use the updated installer from quick.mixnmojo.com. Don't create the default shortcuts or just delete them, they won't work. Make your own start menu/desktop shortcut with the "Monkey" icon in the folder where you installed the game. I had to run in OpenGL mode and some movie parts will only play if you switch to the desktop and click back into the game.

Agreed. The one on LucasArts' website says "posted 11/00"

The one at mixnmojo says "November 3rd, 2007"

The mixnmojo one also says:

"A replacement installer (setup program) for Escape From Monkey Island. The installer that comes with the game can be problematic with newer versions of Windows and refuses to work at all on 64 bit Windows.

This installer works on both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows and has been tested on Windows XP and Vista. It should work fine with all Windows versions though.

It performs a full install of the game and comes with my Escape From Monkey Island Launcher – which adds extra features beyond those in the game’s original launcher."

I got it to work on my 64bit Windows 7. Trust me. This new setup file works.

EDIT:
I used the new EMI Launcher from quick.mixnmojo.com to get EMI to run windowed for this screenshot, but to actually play the game, I just have my Windows Shortcut run the Monkey4.exe (or Monkey.exe, which is the original launcher, either one works) file to run the game fullscreen without asking me, and it works like a charm.

Incidentally, I did at one time use mixnmojo's new EMI Launcher to run EMI in a higher resolutionthan the default (640x480), and it didn't work well at all. The cutscenes screw up because they try to play in 640x480 anyway.

The default resolution works fine, so you don't really need the new launcher at all, you just need to install the game with the new setup files.
