Unhappy screaming narwhal: orange and green squares instead of text

the title says it all. the game installed fine, but after taking a few minutes to load, the splash page has orange and green squares instead of text! not to mention the mouse lags and it is running incredibly slow. please help, i love the monkey island games!

i know a fair amount about computers but the workings of video cards, drivers, and processor speeds are beyond me. here are my deets:

Agreed. It's definitely a graphic card issue.

Either your graphic card is too weak or your drivers are too old.
