How have we managed to resurrect a thread from mid 2009? Anyway, in no order, bar the first one, because Hendrix was the best modern musician ever. Period. Otherwise, mostly classic rock and heavy metal. With the occasional alternative rock band.

Jimi Hendrix
The Rolling Stones
The Who
Iron Maiden
Thin Lizzy
Black Sabbath (RIP Dio!)
Deep Purple
Elbow
Audioslave
The Gone Jackals (and not for the obvious reason of Full Throttle)
Led Zeppelin

The list continues, but they're definitely my top 10 +1.

I can't think hard enough to give a fair list right now, but of the ones I saw while briefly scanning the posts in this thread, Radiohead and Elbow stood out.

Thinking of Audioslave, i have to think of Soundgarden , then Nirvana, then Pearl Jam, then Neil Young, then The Black Keys, then Link Wray, then The Pixies, then The Breeders, then Belly, then Aimee Mann, then Randy Newman, then The Peanuts, then Beethoven, then The Velvet Underground, then The Doors, then Iggy Pop, then DEVO, then Red Hot Chili Peppers, then Radiohead, then Thom Yorke, then Blur, then Wagner which then brings me back to Sam&Max. :O)

An ongoing audio adventure. Music is definately one of the best things in life!

Thanks! Some of the lesser known artists on my list I discovered playing at small events in NYC. They have gotten bigger now and tour other countries, so they are all growing in popularity.

He does a lot of songs that have been around for a long time. But I like the fact that he has brought them back for a modern audience. I also love what he does with modern pop songs, giving them a completely new feel. Plus, he does a brilliant accent for some of the older American songs that he sings, he has it dead on. I kicked myself for missing him when he came to NY.

@JedExodus I would love to randomly see members of the Proclaimers. I saw the talk show that had David Tennant meet them. That was so much fun to watch.

I listen to lots of kinds of music and lots of different performers, but at the moment, I can only think:

Alas, poor Dio....

I've posted my favorite bands in the other thread, but I have a few more to add, so here's my revised list:

Marilyn Manson
Within Temptation
Type O Negative (RIP, Pete )
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Metallica
Akira Yamaoka (not a band, but still)
The Beatles
The Doors
Zug Izland
The Talking Heads

I've also been getting into Gary Numan lately. I've listened to Down in the Park so many times that I felt it was unfair to not give the rest of his stuff a try.

...it's about right I think, but the order is probably a bit out... Idlewild should certainly be number one. The Beatles need to be in that list too, mainly because they were the first band I ever liked.

@Jenny
Ah okay, that explains it.

Hmm, regarding your interest in these older songs and Max Raabe i wonder how old you are because if you're a younger person, it's really not this common.

My taste in music is all over the place, but the band I obsessed about in my teens was Nirvana (a whole two years ago!). At various points I've been obsessed with The Vaselines, REM, Black Mountain, The Breeders, Strawberry Switchblade, Pixies, The Breeders, Jimi Hendrix, Sonic Youth, The Raincoats, Shonen Knife, Leadbelly, Captain Beefheart and The Velvet Underground.

Right now I'm basically listening to nothing but the Tales of Monkey Island soundtrack, Leadbelly and, when I'm feeling a little down, the first Lightning Dust album. I occasionally find myself humming New Orleans stuff. Benny Goodman's been playing more frequently.

I tend to go through phases where I'm doing any three of the following - games, books, movies, music, illustration/painting - and right now music isn't on my list, so I'm not doing much of it.
