Spoilers! Similarities between DeCava and GuyBrush [Spoilers]

It just finished replaying LotL again

and It struck me, Finally

how Similar DeCava and Guybrush are.

I mean they both introduce themselves as "Mighty...." be it explorer or Pirate, while striking the exact same pose.

The description of what Coronado does to get off of Phatt Island seems to be an exagerated version of something Guybrush would do, And for that matter what was he doing ON phatt island anyway.

There is also the fact they are both being sent on quests by the VooDoo lady

is this all Serenditpity
or is there something more sinister at work?

Opinions?

While I agree that it was done on purpose, I think at least part of the purpose was comedy.

just as lechuck is a novice adventurer, guybrush and decava are seasoned adventurers

this seems to be a theme running through the series. remember d'ora or whatever guy who was trying to solve a puzzle to find the dark ninja dave action figure? he was a total noob at adventuring

and when guybrush explains his adventuring plan to morgan, she seems disgusted at that approach to solving the problem.

it's almost like everybody's becoming self-aware that they are adventurers in an adventure game

Purpose or not, Da Cava is trapped again - without - the bottle of...you know. So I wouldn't be surprised if he never got out again.

They are definitely Kindred spirits, they accomplish goals in a distinct particular way where as others around them would take a more direct approach, and do not understand why they do it their way...

BTW has anyone here actually tried solving a problem their way? Its not as easy as they make it seem.

Yeah, DeCava is a parody of adventure game heroes.

DeCava has a lot of faith in his 'adventuring' skills, whereas Guybrush just goes with the flow - doesn't really plan anything. DeCava spends years planning anything and seems to deliberately choose the hardest way.
I mean Growing his nails out to carve them into a lock picking set and collecting 10,000 grubs to build a replacement - comeon!

I just wanted to point out maybe DeCava had business on Phatt islands library, lots of information in there about certain sunken artifacts. As for how he was imprisoned? hmm, maybe confused identity? lol

Adventurers tend to acquire items in a less than legal way... he was probably picked up for shop lifting.

I always thought of DeCava as kind of a subtle commentary on adventure game/gamers and adventure game puzzles. Let's face it: there have been some rather bizarre puzzles over the years that have convinced people to do some rather crazy things over the years.

While none have been actually crazy enough to make us collect 15 bazillion grubs, there certainly have been lots of instances of puzzles whose solutions are unreasonable and illogical: exactly the kind of solutions that DeCava would come up with. For instance, I'm sure DeCava would have a blast with the 'get the item from the subway track' puzzle in The Longest Journey.

Frogacuda (and some others) definitely have this pinned correctly, in my opinion.

There was a thread a while ago that went something along the lines of "Is DaCava and the Voodoo Lady Guybrush's real parents?" The thread was flamed by MI2 fans who still think the MI universe is all a fantasy in the mind of a little kid and I can't be bothered scrounging it up again but when I was playing Chapter 3 (and while I still think there is no family resemblance between Guybrush and the Voodoo Lady) I started thinking "What if DeCava really is Guybrush's father?" I mean they were near identical in some respects.

Having finished the chapter I would now think it surprising if DeCava was indeed Guybrush's father, I just thought I'd add this nugget to the mix.

Hmm, impossible to say whether mr. Guy was old enough to remember his parents or not but both Voodoo lady and De Cava have brown eyes, and Guy's are blue, maybe he's adopted but I doubt.
So like I said above, I doubt he'll get outta the manatee again. The guy was already 'choo-choo' enough before he got out. Now with the crew that never even wanted out in the first place is back inside partying 24/7, he's back on the start-line.

Yeah, you're right. It was just something that struck me as odd while I was playing the game. If I hadn't have read that thread the thought never would have crossed my mind.

On another note I wouldn't completely discount DeCava from returning at a later date. I'm sure he could come up with an equally hair-balled idea to get back out of the Manatee.
