Tho I think (like mentioned in another posting) that we only read it into that joke, because now we can do that kind of connection. That kind of humor makes a game/movie timeless.
I'll take the dress scene with guybrush as an example:

As a kid I found it funny because he was looking forward to a cool costume (also with the other costumes hanging around in the shop you don't expect it). The fact that he (a pirate) had to run around in a pink dress (back then -> Princess =/= Pirate) was hilarious. Today I could draw the connection to a more "grown up" joke. Whatever that would be.
Its a joke one more than just one layer.

This concept is modulair enough to establish same-sex relationships, but merely because of "user-input". These sort of relationships is easily avoided by people who do not have any interest in homosexuality (and will practically be non-existent, merely somewhere un-triggered in the code, like dust you swept under the carpet).

For games with a storyline and other static/fixed properties, homosexuality is less likely to pop up

I can remember one game with a homo...but lulz, he died within 20 minutes ^^;; he got smashed by a big lump of ice... geez, that's another way to add gay to gaming >__>;;;

it would be funny to find out that stan was gay all along. like for some reason guybrush is trying to distract stan like he did with the 2 pirates in chapter 2.

guybrush: 'hey stan look over there theres a girl with a really low cut top on!
stan:' im gay..'
guybrush:' oh..i meant to say a guy with an awesome six-pack sun bathing'
stan:' where!'

I think a better idea would to be for Elaine to experiment before going back to him with Morgan.

It's better just to imply someone's gay. If you have an openly gay character then you lose a lot of the humour

I don't see the need. These games are highly entertaining without touching on what is often political hot buttons.

if they did, there goes my interest of the series. Seriously. I already don't like the "adult" humor they already have. If they introduced a gay character... just no. Absolutely freaking not.

I don't see why one gay charecter to like 100s of straight could hurt the franchise

I'd say no for the simple fact that it would bring out all the homophobes. You know the "I'm so straight because I hate gay people" types and of course the ones who think that it's the end of the world for showing diversity in a lighthearted manner. I have no problem if they do, but I don't think it would be worth it once all the bashes come out. It's a sad fact that people waste so much hatred and anger on people simply because of their sexual orientation and most of the time they do it because they are still hiding their own.

Okay, this is getting too in depth for a Monkey Island conversation. Let's talk more lightheartedly.

Still, adding gay to games can be very lucrative for small (indie?) game studio's. Most of the gay/lesbian people I know are gamers as well (mostly hardcore gamers, Smash Bros Brawl, WoW, ESPECIALLY Namco Tales and such, non casual). This fact could create a lot of interest in the gaygamer-community since gay-themed stories are so rare.

Question: Has there ever been a gay main character in a video game? Why not?
