I just finished the third game yesterday and i really enjoyed it. It was pure adventure, they didn't try to add any other genre into it. Most of the puzzles were inventory based, just one or two were convo based. no Myst-type puzzles (which i despise!) . The cutscenes and their direction were greatly improved from the first game (which i didn't like at all), and they also managed to change my opinion about cell shading on human characters. They looked great. The plot, on the other hand, I think is the weakest point in the games. I wouldn't call the series a must have, but it's definitely worth looking in to, and you definitely get your money's worth.
