Default ToMI 5 - Launcher crashes on Win 7 (64-bit) - SOLVED

Hi

Recently reinstalled my computer with Win 7 (clean install, not upgrade). Used to have Win XP.

Now, when starting ToMI 5, the launcher crashes immediately.
I tried everything mentioned here: http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/...ad.php?t=13274
and here http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/...ad.php?t=13088

I then tried installing episodes 1 and 4, and they work fine, launcher starts and I can start the game.

All drivers are the most recent versions and Windows and IE are set to auto-update (so should be most recent versions as well)

I've attached my DxDiag info

Actually there is a newer Nvidia driver.

I would try a clean boot and checking the installer.

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG --> Click OK
2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
4. Select the Services tab
5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
6. Click Disable all
7. Click on OK
8. Click Restart.
9. After reboot, run game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG--> Click OK
2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
3. Click Ok
4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

Based on Will's post

MD5 Check
Please download and install Hashcheck.
Then unzip and copy the attached MD5 File into the folder that contains the installers you downloaded from Telltale.

Finally just double click on the .md5 file for verification and tell us the results.
Green: File is okay.
Yellow: File is missing.
Read: File is corrupt.

My apologies for not trying the msconfig test, because that solved it

Turns out my Creative X-Fi soundcard has a service called "Creative Audio Service" that was the cause.

Just stopping the service manually while Windows is running is enough.
Sound works fine when the service is stopped, so not a real problem.

Thank you

Maybe the support guys can use this in future troubleshooting or fixing it, since the problem apparently doesn't exist in ToMI 1-4

I'm glad you could track it down. I found this about Creative Audio Service.
I don't know if it does other things too, but it is related to Dolby Digital Live encoding.
