I know I'm late to this thread, but I generally agree with Avistew.
And I have no problem with the comercial aspect of it because there are so many MANY other options for the day. In fact, I've always gotten the best responses on VDay when I've done things that are entirely non-comercial. Generally speaking if I'm with someone I try to do something fun and unique with them (usually involving staying home (though the time I went to SILENCE! The Silence of the Lambs Musical was a particularly spectacular Vday)).
If I'm single I try to do something fun with my fellow single friends. Sit around and watch movies or play board games or something. Light-hearted entertaining stuff.
