Coming back on the game thing, I've been thinking...
I think we might be more used to games as a series/license, like the Mario games, the Zelda games, etc, and quicker to expect sequels to games while a "normal" movie stands alone.
And of course for those games, such as Grim Fandago, that did work on their own and wrapped things up nicely, people tend to think that they shouldn't make a sequel, too.
Sequels can be very good, but quite often it's either a rehash of the prevous story (either the same or the opposite), or a story that's so completely different that if feels like the story was forced onto characters that didn't work for it. I personally felt that way for Runaway 2 (I know, it's a game, not a movie). Let's just say it felt like a) the main character I had grown to love in the first game didn't exist anymore and b) they were trying to force characters from the first game back into the second one.
It just didn't work as well as the first game for me. That happens all the time with movies, animated or not.
On the other hand, there ARE sequels I like better than whatever it's a sequel to.
At any rate, be it movies, books, games, etc, I tend to prefer when it was thought of as a series, rather than the first one made and "hey, I should add more" when it's successful. Keeping in mind that there is the option of "I would to more, but in the meantime I'll try to make something that can stand alone, while leaving room for the sequel I'm thinking of".
