Not exactly, see, Steam should and has an offline option, but because it constantly needs to update, if I go somewhere where the wi-fi won't connect to Steam for whatever reason it'll be stuck on "updating" before asking if I want to start it offline, but then it won't start at all because it's not updated. Thus I can't play if I can't open the program.
If you set it to run in offline mode as default, the games won't know when there is an update available, and hence won't block your access. Of course you would need to make sure everything is up to date before setting it to offline mode, but it should be fine after that.

GREAT! So I just finished downloading the ~4GB of Portal, go to play it, and I get this message: This game is currently unavailable. Please try again later.

HELP!

I think I will enjoy Portal until the levels become too difficult for my feeble mind.
As far as I'm concerned, Portal is an Adventure Game, or at least a not-too-distant cousin somewhere in a vaguely-defined "puzzle" genre. Not calling Portal an Adventure just sort of feels like not calling Loom an Adventure.

Have you tried booting it up multiple times, or turning your PC off and on again? I think i may have had a similair issue when i first tried to boot up the game (it jammed i think), but on the 2cnd or third attempt it was fine.

4GB?
Isn't it 1.5? (Still a lot for my feeble connection)

Right-click on portal. Properties>Local Files>Verify cache intergity (or something to that effect)

If that doesn't work try running in offline mode

Ha! Finally! I have completed Portal! It took me an hour at the end coz I kept getting myself blown up. It was very unhelpful.

I agree. It has much more in common with Myst than it does with Doom. There are a couple of places where I get frustrated because I need to actually react quickly to something, but I get infinite retries so it's not that bad, and really it seemed to be a requirement throughout the 2000s for every adventure game to have at least one annoying reflex-based puzzle, and there were plenty of "real" adventure games that had more of those than Portal does

Black Mesa lol!

Put it's release up there with Beyond Good and Evil 2 and They Hunger - Lost Souls.

Replay it.

They added radios.

Ian described Portal as a "first person adventure game".
He also finished it pretty fast and said he was glad he didn't pay for it.

I've only tried it out for a few minutes to see whether it worked. So far it's more an "escape the room" game to me. Does anyone else have trouble understanding the computer voice? And what's the backstory, or will this become apparent whilst playing?

I personally don't have troubles understanding GlaDos, though I can understand how others can. You should turn on subtitles because what she says is hilarious.

I understand the computer voice quite well, there is some times it breaks with static and stuff, but it's mean to.
You are kind of just thrown in there, with no clue what is going on, but it will all be explained.

Okay, thank. Haven't really looked at the options menu (only to change the keyboard controls (WASD isn't that handy on AZERTY-keyboards ) but I guess a subtitle option is pretty self-evident.

I don't know why, but this game is like a 3D version of some 2D platform flash game I've played years ago. There's just something very familiar about it all, but the first person POV is new. I don't really like such a POV, though, but I think I might still enjoy this game for a while, as I did "Mirror's Edge".
