Okay so for those of you who don't run, this is how it works. Basically, after a marathon there's a bunch of free beer and liquor. That went on for a few hours, but of course they can't do that all day. But runners keep drinking. So, is it three in the afternoon? Will I be partying for almost 12 hours? .... Yes.

Over in Japan, Konami just announced a new game in one of my favorite game series of all time, Suikoden.

Initial reaction:

Then I read that apparently the Japanese trailer makes it clear that, like the last game they released, it's going to take place in an alternate world, and not the same setting that everyone wants it to take place it, namely the world of Suikoden 1-5.

Now I'm more like this:

Congratulations WarpSpeed, you WIN the game.

Would you care to play again?

Doohickey...definately doohickey...

Your prize is the warm feeling of self-accomplishment. Oh, and ten million bucks.

I'll send you a cheque via the British mail system, which means it should reach you by 2098.

Congratulations.

See, I just don't agree. One of the things I really adored about the series was all the connections. Plus, there are several long standing mysteries about the world and some of the recurring characters that it looks like Konami is determined to never resolve. I mean, I'm happy that the series isn't dead, sure, but is really isn't what the fans wanted.

Agreed. Starting with the first game they allude to places like the Circular Palace, Harmonia, the Grasslands to the South, Xexia... and then beginning in the second they start fleshing out the northern kingdoms, what happened to the Crimson Moon Empire after the fall of the Emperor, and start defining the roles of the 26 True Runes... and by part 3 starting to explore Harmonias role in it all, their efforts, the division it creates... And man if part two wasn't pretty hart rending at the end.

So totally agreed. That world is complex and fantastic.

I want to know what the rest of the True Runes are.

I want to see Harmonia, I want to find out why their Emperor keeps interfering with the internal politics of other nations.

I want to know what the deal with Yuber and Pesmerga really is.

I want to learn what really happened to the Sindar.

I want to see Kanakan, where several characters came from.

I don't care what's going on in a completely unrelated world. I'm not invested in that. It won't stop me from playing it if it's a good game, but it also doesn't incite pre-order fever like a true sequel would.

Heck ya!

Though as I understand Harmonia and their possession of the Circle Rune, they're mostly interested in finding all the True Runes in order to bring a state of order to the entire world (that would also inadvertently lead to a state of decline and decay according to Suikoden 3).

Just finished one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read. I'm very pleased that I not only bought it (instead of getting it from the library), but made special arrangements for it to be signed by the author.

So, so sad...but beautiful.
