Embassy work is conducted in the language of the country the embassy represents, not the local language. It's the US embassy located in Japan.

Granted, it would enable me to be able to use my Japanese, and I have all of my friends fom college not too far away. My junior year roommate was from Fukuoka.

Divisionten: Okay, I had shit backwards last night. I still think the embassy sound better on a resume than the DoD. Oooh hey... embassy. That's much more prestigious. I guess something depends on the career path you have in mind too. Are you interested in joining the Foreign Service (and how would you feel about probable posts to less-than-nice countries)?

As for the "probable posts to less-than-nice countries"- the extra benefits you get are equivalent to a military deployment, so the benefits are good enough that unless you specifically asked for a post like that (iraq, etc.) there are enough people who want them that you won't be assigned one otherwise.

That's awesome. I wouldn't want to go to Iraq, but somewhere like Rwanda? Sure (I found Kigali to be surprisingly cosmopolitan). A very dear friend is working in a government post in Honiara at the moment, and she has the most incredible stories. In another life I would have LOVED to work in foreign affairs.

I say Japan. I've never been to Hawaii, but I have been to Japan and if I could speak enough Japanese to do more than compliment the food or could find a job that fits my particular area of expertise, I would move there as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, I happen to already live in the capital for jobs of my major, so I must stay.

ACTA has been signed, but not passed. They still have one more hurdle in June before it become law. THERE IS STILL HOPE!

I hope it doesn't pass. Darknet is a tedious workaround. It's like IRC and Usenet of old. Still, its decentralized nature makes censorship impossible and even if it becomes illegal to access, who fucking cares? Let's see them find and arrest everyone who uses it. If no one gets hurt by it, why is it a law worth following? Answer: it isn't.

I do believe enforcement will be country specific.... so it depends how hard each country wants to press. Agreeing and doing something about it are two different things. Canada has been on board since the beginning and I can tell you, we wont be doing much more about it than we already are with copyright infringement. Might take down high traffic illegal sites, but I seriously doubt any individuals will be targeted.

Fair-use laws will remain intact even with this. I'm not too worried, personally.

We're in America, and so it will probably hit as hard and as often as possible. Oh well, I've got my stockpile of IP addresses and I guess I should try to figure out how to use proxies that aren't affiliated with my campus. Either that or I can try to catch up on my IRL stuff instead.

Well, that was... interesting. My choices are APAN in Hawaii or the State Department... in Washington DC. Huh. The other two who got state and got replies the same time as me both got Japan but I didn't.

Both positions are similar and computer intensive, so I'll need to brush up on my C++ again. I think I'll go with Washington. Better contact choices and a full work schedule, where as Hawaii is only 20 per week.
