I realise that some people don't WANT to learn to drive, mostly because they don't feel they need to.
I think that the "nor will I ever have a license" part, combined with the fact of allegedly having to wait for hours for public transit or a ride (which doesn't sound like a very pleasant thing) are kind of a hint that this isn't the case here.

Now, some people might also be going to great lengths in order to boycott the automotive industry, but I don't think there was any sign that this was the case.

As someone who cannot currently drive (and isn't currently allowed to learn, but might get a license at some point), and who as experience both in getting rides and in taking public transit, I have to say, finding the schedule for buses and stuff can be annoying, but there are definitely times when it's much quicker and less frustrating than having to find a parking spot, not to mention having to figure out how to get wherever you are going.

The only reason I'm not getting mine is because I'm broke, and have already spent thousands on it.

To elaborate, in the Netherlands, you'll have to get actual driving lessons to be able to do an exam (the theoretical exam could be taken regardless though). This is because lesson cars have special pedals for the instructor, so that they can intervene when a situation gets too dangerous.

Well this has probably been one of my least productive days ever, only really beaten by the ones in which I've spent most of it asleep (usually due to staying up all the day and night (or longer) before). Have just been listening to episodes of the Indoor Kids podcast (must be about 10 or so) while playing Football Manager 2012 (and that's only because I can't afford to get Football Manager 2013 yet).

True I've been feeling like shit all day as well, full of cold and sneezing very frequently but still this has been a very lazy day. At least tomorrow I'll get myself out of the flat as I'm going to see Skyfall at last (at least I'm seeing this a hell of a lot sooner than I did with the Dark Knight Rises, relatively speaking). And there's plans to go and see Argo on Thursday which is good.

Dave Purcell is the older brother of Steve Purcell, who actually created Sam & Max (Steve would make comics making fun of his brother's comics, and then eventually Dave gave Steve the characters for a birthday present).

Although, admittedly, Sam didn't have a gun in the original comics by Dave Purcell, so in a way you are kind of right.

I’ll be honest: Telltale is only my second favorite game company. My first favorite is Big Fish Games, due to my love of the Mystery Case Files series.

Therefore, criticizing someone for not driving when that someone is not driving because they were not able to pass the eyesight exam is akin to criticizing someone in a wheelchair for sitting around all day.
I didn't criticize. Some people just don't drive, by their own choice. I also didn't know he's legally blind, as I don't recall anyone ever mentioning that around here before I posted.

I'm not being insensitive. I seriously thought he just didn't want to, so I commented that I didn't think I could do that.

I gotta say, you'd have to pay one hell of a premium. Especially if you lived in New York or the American Southwest.

I wasn't able to get a licence though I wanted to. I failed the exam twice because of sheer panic in 2001 and it took me more than six years to save enough money for another try.
Chyron8472, you're underestimating the monetary aspect of getting a licence in some countries.
My third and finally successful try cost me nearly € 1150 (that's almost $ 1480) and I could not have saved that amount without my family supporting me.
So I do see why someone wouldn't be able to get a driver's licence if they desired to have one.

In France, the basic registration is €1,500, which includes 20 hours of driving lessons, but that's the minimum you have to take and most people need more. Like in other places in Europe, all the driving classes have to be taken in a special car with an instructor, and you can't just drive a friend or relative's car out in public until you do have your license.

Money IS a big issue for getting a license, but my main problem is that I'm in a different country, and so I can't get a license here because I'm not a resident, and I can't get one there right now because I'm not there.

They've also been making the tests increasingly difficult, meaning it's pretty rare to pass on your first try, which of course multiplies the costs.

Why does it cost so much to get a license there?

The fee here to get your license is like $25 or something. I'm confused why it would be so blasted high there.

If you had to take a driving class, or if you're including having to pay to register your vehicle, then maybe that might make more sense.... but $1400 to get a driver's license?!?

Here, you have to take a driving class if you're under 16, but if you're over 16 then you don't.
