Default Pre-Devil's Playhouse Telltale games no longer working

Something has happened that's causing all Telltale games before Sam & Max Season 3 to stop working. This is on a machine that previously ran them after a similar problem fixed by updating the audio drivers. All of the SBCG4AP, Bone, and Sam & Max Seasons 1 & 2 games merely appear and disappear from running processes with no error message, log, or window, and Telltale Texas Hold 'Em stays frozen on a black screen (the Steam overlay still operates).

This is on Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit, 2 monitors (disabling one had no effect). Lua for Windows 5.1.4-39 installed, LUA_DEV and LUA_PATH environment variables deleted. Visual Studio 2008 installed.

Have you double checked that (e.g. by running "set" on the command line)?

Please also post a dxdiag log.

dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Then zip the file and attach it to a reply in this Thread.

Running set confirms that they have been deleted. Here's my dxdiag log.

I don't see anything obvious. You can try installing the latest Realtek HDA Driver.

Also try a clean boot.

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG --> Click OK
2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
4. Select the Services tab
5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
6. Click Disable all
7. Click on OK
8. Click Restart.
9. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG--> Click OK
2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
3. Click Ok
4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

Based on Will's post

You are right. I couldn't hurt to disconnect it and any non relevant USB devices and start the game using the mouse.
