It
is a retcon, and you mean compared to Secret, Revenge and Curse.

from wikipedia.org/wiki/retcon
Retroactive continuity (often shortened to retcon) refers to the deliberate alteration of previously established facts in a work of serial fiction.

It's also a
bad retcon that doesn't make sense. Toothrot was called Toothrot before he even arrived on the island, and H.T. Marley was killed when LeChuck went looking for Big Whoop, which was
after he fell in love with Elaine Marley (and she wasn't old enough for it to have been a 20-year-long obsession at that point.)
According to LeChuck in
Curse, Big Whoop is really a portal leading to Hell. When LeChuck passed through it, he died.
According to Estevan in the SCUMM Bar in
Secret, LeChuck was alive when he fell in love with Elaine, but "she told him to drop dead, so he did" which puts LeChuck's death by Big Whoop after the beginnings of his obsession with Elaine.
According to LeChuck in Curse, he killed Rum Rogers after becoming a ghost. Though he doesn't explicitly give the time taken between, it is reasonable to assume he didn't take long before or afterward to kill H.T. Marley. Also, according to Rum Rogers Jr. in
Revenge, when Guybrush beat him at the drinking game, he had "only inherited [Rum Rogers Sr.'s] house two months ago." This means Rum Rogers Sr. was declared dead not too long before those 2 months.
According to the Captain's Log aboard the Sea Monkey in
Secret, the captain refers to his first mate as "Toothrot" throughout the entire voyage to Monkey Island, however in
Escape, Toothrot claims to have taken on the name Herman Toothrot after being hit in the head by various objects while already on Monkey Island at the time that they happened.
And anyway,
this list is supposed to be the "Top 10 best moments of MI," not the Top 10 most controversial/discussed. For Herman to be either a big fat liar or a lunatic is not the sixth best moment of Monkey Island.
