I'm trying to buy an Sam & Max DVD which is under $50 dollars, but I can still select free shipping. Can someone please confirm is this is genuine free shipping?

If your shopping cart total is under $50, then no, you'll have to pay for shipping.

Are you sure you're just not seeing that the DVD is $0 (because you already own the season)? In which case, you /only/ have to pay postage.

On further inspection, it seems the item is more expensive than I previously thought, and and totaling to just over $50.

Silly me.
