Default The way different dinosaurs are mentioned

I know this is a bit silly but it's a burning question in my brain.

Something that has really bothered me for I believe as long as I've been interested in dinosaurs is that when people talk about Tyrannosaurus, they speak of it as T. rex. Is that really necessary since there's only one species in the genus? None of the other dinos seem to get that treatment when they'd truly deserve it. There seems to be quite a bunch of Dilophosaurus and Velociraptor fans, yet there is no mention of for example D. wetherilli and D. sinensis, or V. mongoliensis and V. osmolskae.

In the movie only T. rex is mentioned by species and all the others by genus, I find that quite odd. Why does T. rex have this privilege?

T Rex is short an easy to spell and sounds cool, unlike V. mongoliensis

Erm... you mean for the films? Basically because its the main star of the films, Kinda like Die hard = Bruce Willis...

T-rex is the most famous known dino so it makes sence to have it as the star.
(Epsecially how badass it was in the 1st and 2nd films).
