Default The Anime and Manga Thread

Since we've gotten to derailing the Post A Pic thread, best to start a new one.

Anyway, use this space to talk about your favorite anime and manga, your collections, recommendations, etc.

My top 5 Amine? (in no particular order)
Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Mushishi, Kino's Journey and Durarara.

Manga?
Detective Conan, Mushishi, Fullmetal Alchemist, xxxHolic, and +Anima (so sue me, it's my guilty pleasure)

I'm watching Mononoke and Bartender right now, I don't really have that large of a choice other than what DVDs I managed to bring with me. American streaming sites don't work here and our dorm's single tv set is currently on the fritz.

I actually like Naruto.
I like the manga well enough, and I've cosplayed Naruto three times as two characters, but I haven't gone anywhere near the anime. A couple years ago, I came to the conclusion that Toonami is where Shonen Jump goes to die.

The anime, I really really tried. I finally stopped watching Shippuuden after the Pain Arc. And I even bared myself enough to watch and retain my seriousness after those horrible final fight scenes. But the fillers... They managed to kill my arrogance.

Manga still goes kickass though, although it is a bit weird.

I'm not a profound anime/manga follower truth to be told. I liked Death Note and I watched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann with fair amount of amazement.

Hmm Fawful and I have a lot of similair favourites. The only difference is that by rule I don't watch Anime that is an adapation from a manga and DOESN'T cover all the content.

And didn't you just major spoil Umineko by listing the villain? I haven't seen it myself but from what I understand it's partially a whodunnit.

No, it's not fully a whodunnit. It merely starts that way. And yeah, I guess I shouldn't say any of this as it is better to go into the series without knowing it's true plot, which I HAVEN'T spoiled here. I'm not a fan of gore, but I am a fan of horror in Victorian settings, and I like the concept of the series.

How does it fair up to Higurashi? I watched that. 2nd season became a bit longwinding probably because they tried to stretch a less number of chapters into 26 eps. Still pretty good. I especially liked how they handle the big mysteryIt started out as something occult and supernatural but got a very cool twist If it didn't have all that 'filler' I am sure I could give the series a spot in my top list.

You know what's a really good show that people should watch but have probably never heard about? Moyashimon (just, do everyone a favor and watch the anime, not the live action drama that came later. UUUUUGH)

It's a story about a ag-school freshman named Sawaki who can see microbes with the naked eye and interact with them. And before you claim he's Blessed With Suck, remember, "How d you make beer, wine or other alcoholic beverages?". Yes, there is an entire story arc about Sawaki coercing some yeast to make spirits.

Also, the microbes are !@#$ing cute.

I don't know, as I haven't watched Higurashi. As far as I know, though, they're very different series. However, the best thing to do is to play the visual novel, or read the manga. Avoid the anime, because it's a rushed, crappy, paceless piece of cow shit. The only good thing to come of that one was the opening music which is awesome. Keep in mind that the visual novel is VERY long and WILL take you forever to get through, but it is worth it. The manga is a better adaption but it still can't be a perfect one, as the mystery and plot for Umineko is so complex and layered that leaving even one thing out can make it somewhat impossible to follow or cause it to make less sense. Also, the story was basically DESIGNED to screw with you using the visual novel format, and a lot of that is lost in translation.

On Higurashi, I wanted to watch it for the mystery, but the setting and characters appealed to me far less than Umineko. Apparently, Umineko gets far more disgusting in the gore department, even beating Phantasmagoria believe it or not, than Higurashi ever does. I don't know all of how because I haven't played fully through Episode One of the visual novel, and I stopped in the manga about where I did in the visual novel. I made it farther in the anime, but stopped a bit after the real plot begins so I need to get back into it. It's mostly a matter of the gore I've heard about bugging me, cause damn what I've heard is nasty, and not having the time.

If you read the VN (unless it's the PS3 version) the gore is only described, never seen. It was one of my concerns too when I began reading it and now, well *points at avatar* When the gore is actually seen though in the adaptations...good god I couldn't sleep the night I first read the manga version of EP1's first twilight. Visually though, I'd say the gore gets tamer as the series progresses, but that's IMO. I'd say when it comes to gore it'd go 4>1>2>3>5>6>7 haven't read 8. Pretty much because faces gruesomely "blown up" with the brains showing>stomachs cut open with the guts hanging out>other still kinda gruesome but still not as gruesome deaths>just decapitation>just getting shot

...now that I think about it though, I'm not exactly sure how to rank 1, 2 and 4. Even if it's only described, Battler and Kinzo getting eaten by the goats, with that image, those sounds and music. Good god the nightmare fuel. Also the tea party, which is surprisedly less gruesome in the anime than I expected and even is nightmare retardand by the end.

Hahaha, if anything the series is about proving that she's not the whodunnit =P *Major spoilers that don't actually say the whodunnit but still* We never do find out the REAL whodunnit anyways.

Anyways *Ctr+F "Neuro"*

I just started reading Battle Royale. Very violent and distrubing at times but it's interesting.

Okay. I'm part of the Tatami Galaxy crew. I LOVE Tatami Galaxy. It encompasses most everything I like about modern Japanese culture and excludes everything I hate about modern Japanese culture. It's also the one of the few anime I've ever watched that had a really satisfying ending.

I also like really old hokey older shows like Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro, Shin Chan, and Doraemon. Stuff that I grew up with. I also like Black Jack in manga form. It was my mom's favorite manga, so I was exposed to it a lot when I was younger.
