Default Episode 3 for Walking Dead will not start
Hello, Telltale Game and Support,

Just to start off, this is an absolutely amazing game and story line you have developed. It's really engaging and I would love to play more of it in the future. However, I have encountered a problem.

I, like many others, have encountered the error message of 'Walkingdead101 has stopped working.' However, this did not come up when I played Episode 1 and 2. When I started the third episode, this message immediately popped up. I have tried the FAQ suggestions and other thread recommendations, but none of them have helped thus far.

Any help from anyone? I appreciate your time and assistance.

The game was a Christmas present from a local Best Buy shop, I believe.

By the by, do you want me to post any other information in regards to other troubleshooting methods? So far, I've tried using a compatibility mode (as stated by the FAQ), restarting the computer, did a windows reboot and attempted using lower graphics. None of which have helped, unfortunately.

I was thinking of corrupt Episode 3 files, but a CD version makes that less likely.
Nevertheless i would try reinstalling it.

Just to be safe, make a backup of the savegame folder before.

Futher, please post your dxdiag info.

dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.

I have saved my game data and folder and uninstalled the game. Unfortunately, within that process, I managed to encounter a prolonged 'black screen' in the beginning of the game and cannot advance to the main menu. I have tried to run as an administrator, used different compatibility modes, restarted computer, and moved prefs.props around the folders. None of which have seemed to work for now.

The CD issue could be caused by your computer trying to boot from the CD. You can check the settings in the BIOS to disable Booting from CDs, and try if it helps.

Before we try anything, undo all workarounds you tried for the black screen.
That means:
- Disable compatibility modes for the WalkingDead101.exe
- Delete any prefs.prop you might find in the install folder (Make a copy to some other location first, so you can restore it if necessary)
- Delete the savegame folder, any replace it by your backup savegame folder.

If you still get the black screen, try letting it run for a while. I don't know the CD versions, but the game usually loads updates in the beginning. You can also try if pressing Alt-Enter makes it look normal, but the window needs to keep focus for the game to run.

If none of that works, please try updating to the latest graphics driver and sound driver.

I have reversed all the methods, attempted a windowed version of the game and downloaded all the components as you have asked. Unfortunately, I am still unable to access the main menu and am still stuck at a black screen. I have waited for anything to change for 15 minutes and I think at that point nothing is happening.

Do you have any other suggestions thus far? I know I'm putting a lot of issues on this right now, but I thank you very much for helping me try and fix this problem.

It would be good if you could post a new dxdiag with the updated drivers.

You can try the "restore previous version" feature (right click, "properties", "restore previous version") on the prefs.prop in the savegame folder.
If its available, try all versions, starting with the latest.

I have also tried to find the 'restore previous version' option, but am unable to find it in the savegame folder.

That's odd. Your sound driver was updated. Your graphics driver is the same old one though. Please try running the installation for the graphics driver again, and report if you get any error messages during that process.

I attempted the Catalyst Software Suite and got an error claiming, 'Setup has determined that the operating system in use is not a 32bit OS and as this Setup is intended for 32bit system only, Setup will now exit.' I managed to download the second link/ HydraVision Package, however. I thought I downloaded the second one prior to this post.

Unfortunately, it still is not allowing me to go past a black screen.

Thanks for the upgrades, by the by. All of them have been updated to my computer which hopefully will make things run a bit more clearer/smoother. Unfortunately, it still isn't allowing me to get past the black screen and into the main menu.

This seems odd how I'm have this trouble now when I could play the game before. Just in case, I put the dxdiag up again for any further clarification/aid. Any other suggestions?

(Also, apologies if my lack of knowledge on computers is kind of slowing us down. I'm not exactly tech savvy.)

You are doing great. You drivers are now up to date.

I still don't see why it crashes though.

I after the updates it's time to repeat trying some things we did earlier.
Make sure you have made a backup of your savegames.

Then please delete the original savegame folder and uninstall the game.

Then install it again and try if it starts.

I got to the main menu this time! By uninstalling/installing it once more, I got back to the main menu! Even better, I was even able to play episode three at this point! I suppose it was a corrupted file/not meeting the graphics requirement that caused the issue (which seems odd the game let me progress this far without telling me I don't have a system that can withstand these kinds of graphics).

I seem to be having some difficulty, though. I replaced the installed 'The Walking Dead' Folder with my old saved games, but it seems its not being recognized. Any suggestions?

Either way, thanks so much for the help! I can't wait to continue with the game and greatly appreciate the time and effort you gave me to fix this error.

Please check if the date/time of the prefs.prop in the savegame folder is updated when you start the game, by looking at it in the Windows Explorer.

By updated, do you mean click on the icon? Because when I go into the folder, the date and time always reveals the most recent.

The exact question is: If you start the game, does the prefs.prop's date change to the date and time you started the game?

That's important to check if the game is using the savegame folder you are looking at.

Ah, apologies. When I attempt to play the game and shows no previous data mentioned, the prefs.prop's date and time do change to the latest attempt to play the Walking Dead game.

Good. So we know that it's the correct folder.

Please try copying your backed up prefs.prop and .save files into that folder again.
Then tell me the approximate size of the prefs.prop before and after running the game.
