Any hints/suggestions on how to get past the slashing part. The arrow comes up to hit the left or right key, but I cannot seem to master this part.

Wait until the warning rings sync in. Don't be afraid to wait a second after the left/right symbol becomes active to press.

Yup, you must wait until you see the green ring around the arrow to hit it properly.
