5. Metroid Prime (1 and 3)
I'm lumping these two together under one entry because they sort of tie together. In Metroid Prime,
just that short clip of a hand bursting from the remains of Metroid Prime, showing that something went wrong and things aren't over just yet, was an incredible teaser that I still love. And in Metroid Prime 3,
I really loved the way the series culminated with Samus going to Phaaze, the source of all the trouble in the last three games, and finally eliminating her doppelganger. Then on top of that, I really enjoyed the sequence where she returned to Elysia to reflect. I thought it was simple, but effective. Metroid Prime 2's ending was pretty decent as well, with
the big fight with a deteriorating Dark Samus and the Luminoth all waking up, but it just doesn't have the impact of the other two. Also, Zero Suit Samus looked creepy as all hell in Metroid Prime 2's 100% ending.
4. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
You guys really didn't think I would make a list without including a Kingdom Hearts game, did you? Throughout the game, you pretty much know where things are going, but it still blew me away to actually see how everything played out and where everyone ended up.
3. Assassin's Creed II
As much as the end of Gemini Rue had me glued to my seat, wanting to reach the ending, that's how bad the ending of Assassin's Creed II left me wanting the next game.
It pretty much blew my mind when Ezio finally reached his goal, only for the hologram to ignore him and speak to Desmond, knowing that he would be listening in on Ezio's memories over 500 years later. And to cap it all off, Desmond's response was perfect. "What the fuck?!"
2. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
I've always loved the story of Majora's Mask, so naturally, it has my favorite ending of the series. Granted, I've never seen what the ending is like if you don't complete the Bomber's Notebook, but in the ending where you do, I love seeing all of the game's plot threads resolved, the end result of every single person you helped during the game.
1. Gemini Rue
That's right. After going through the list of every game I've ever played, choosing my favorite endings, and weighing them against each other, I decided that my favorite video game ending is from an indie game.
I admit, as the game came closer to the reveal, I began to guess that Sayuri and Epsilon Five were same person, but I didn't realize that Delta Six and Azriel were the same person until the last second, and it left me reeling. By that point, even though I had no business still being awake, I couldn't leave my computer until I had finished that game.
Honorable Mention: Tales of Monkey Island, Episode 4: The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood
If it wasn't for this ending, I probably wouldn't be posting on this forum right now. This is the one case where I can honestly say that I've made a ton of friends just because the ending of a game was so intense, I just had to talk to somebody about it, and I came to these forums to do that.
