I love both games. As Retro mentioned youz do have a normal movie build up though. You know the build up of good movies where you get to know the characters and start to like them so that the things they do to them later on have a larger impact on you. Not like modern movies where you cheer for the killer to come and get those asshole sobs.
Both games are playing out like movies and puzzles are somewhat limited (Phantasmagoria has a lot more of them than Phantasmagoria 2.

Spoony's phantastic Let's Play of the second game which has less puzzles but is a lot more on the mad side of gaming.
