The assertion was that we don't blame kids for crimes or put them on trial for them. That's not really true, kids not only
can be held responsible according to the laws on the books in certain states, but
are. It's just that most cases involving kids go to family court.
Hell, it was only a few years ago that New York put a 9 year old kid on trial for Manslaughter. California charged a 10-year old kid with murder within the past year, etc. so yeah, it does happen, even in first-world countries.
In the case of kids that were a year or two older, they were tried and convicted as adults; e.g. Lionel Tate was sentenced to life for something he did at the age of 12, Nathaniel Abraham was likewise tried as an adult and convicted for something he did when he was 11.
