Walkers walk, they don't climb. Logically if you're a human, you want to take advantage of being more physically able and that means putting yourself somewhere the walkers can't possibly reach you due to their physical limitations. In that sense, climbing up a rope or a difficult set of steps, or even destroying the staircase in the St John house and using a drop down rope or ladder means you're out of reach. Clem had the right idea, the one place you don't want to be is on the ground.
