Default TWD: Unofficial alternative PC/Mac episode download options

Please make a backup of the games savegame folder first, as described below, so you can restore it, should anything happen:

Note to Windows XP users:
The paths are different. Please replace all instances of
%userprofile%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\
with
%userprofile%\My Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\
(International users: Also exchange "My Documents" for the translation into your language from here on)

Here are two ways of downloading the episodes outside of the game.

I highly recommend using the semi-automatic download.
It's way less work, and it checks the files for errors. The manual download bypasses error checking and may cause crashes in the game, in case files got corrupted during the download.

Semi-automatic Download:
I wrote a python script that semi-automatically downloads the episodes.

- Make a backup copy of:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/
PC: %userprofile%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\

- Delete the Temp files from:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/SyncFS/Temp/
PC: %userprofile%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\SyncFs\Temp

- Download and install Python. Make sure you get Python version 2.7.3, as the 3.x version is not compatible with the script.

- Download and unzip the python script
Mac: Mac_Downloader.zip
PC: PC_Downloader.zip

- If you don't want to download a certain episode, delete the .json file (e.g. WalkingDead103.json) from the unzipped folder.

- Now start the TWD_Json_Downloader.py.
Mac: Double click TWD_Json_Downloader.py to open the script in IDLE, and then press F5 to run it
PC: Double click TWD_Json_Downloader.py

It will then download the Episodes into individual folders e.g. "WalkingDead102".

- Copy these folders to:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/SyncFs/Data/
PC: %userprofile%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\SyncFs\Data

- Start the game and press "GET" in the "Download content" menu for each episode you downloaded. It should show as "installed" within less than a minute.

- Close the game and again delete the Temp files from:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/SyncFS/Temp/
PC: %userprofile%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\SyncFs\Temp

If you should run into any trouble with the script please let me know. I did my best to make it work without issues.

Manual Download:
Please seriously consider using the semi-automatic download.
The manual download bypasses checking the files for errors that can occur during download, and might cause random crashes/freezes in the game.
Also it is a tedious and error-prone method.

- Make a backup copy of:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/
PC: %userprofile%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\

- Download the files below individually by episode into a separate folder, so you don't mix them up.

- Copy the files into the folder specified below for each episode. If it doesn't exist, create it.

- Delete the Temp files from:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/SyncFS/Temp/
PC: %userprofile%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\SyncFs\Temp

- Start the game and press "GET" in the "Download content" menu for each episode you manually downloaded. It should show as "installed" within less than a minute.

- Close the game and again delete the Temp files from:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/SyncFS/Temp/
PC: %userprofile%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\SyncFs\Temp

Why don't you upload the .json files?

Thanks blackvulcan3. I added an automatic Download option to the first post.
I'll check the .json files now.

I downloaded the files for episode 2 manually and put them in the folder.
Here's what happend:

-First try, I go to the download content section, and press "get" on episode 2, it waits for a minute, then it says it's installed. So I go to the save game where I just finished ep 1, and press play.
The game crashes.

- Second try, I repeat until the pressing the "get" button part, it also waits for a while, but then starts to download....
I quit and check the folder where the files should be, and half of the files are erased because it started re-downloading. Silly me forgot to backup the ep 2 files so I have to download them again manually which takes ages with my connection

Anyone else with this problem?

Tried it again with ep2 now, and now it works again.
Haven't tried with 3 yet, but I'll be making backups when I try to start up that ep.

You have the first episode installed, right?

It kinda works... all kinds of errors with save games though. Sometimes it saves and then i can't play the game again without the "GET" button coming back...

If you have Lion installed the right Library folder is hidden. Go to Finder and press the "option" key while in the Go menu.

You should see Library appear in the drop down. Select that library folder.

Thanks for that Vulcan, your instructions are brilliant, even for a novice.
To TTG, if this guy is not on your payroll, make it happen. Seriously!
I know your CRM might be small, perhaps even non-existent, but I think the dedication, patience and persistence of everyone who has struggled with downloading extra episodes is testament to our love of the game and the world you are trying to create. Work with us, and we will work with you.
cheers

So, for episode 2, the mac files are name like this?

0_98_103backpatch.ttarch
0_99_patch.ttarch
1_WalkingDead102_english_pc_data.ttarch
2_WalkingDead102_english_pc_voice.ttarch
3_WalkingDead102_english_pc_ms.ttarch
4_WalkingDead102_english_pc_tx.ttarch
5_WalkingDead102_english_pc_mesh.ttarch
6_WalkingDead102_english_pc_anichore.ttarch
7_mac_shaders.ttarch

Because although it seems to work, as in 'Get' seems to work and show episode 2 installed, the game shows textures all screwed up and controls do not seem to work. I can see a scarecrow (I think) but the textures are all pink.

Thanks for the update, but it is still not working for me at the moment.

Now that I have restarted the game, I am back to having to 'Get' episode 2 and it starts the Internet download again. I kept copies of the files so will try again, but I don't think this is a fix just yet.

Re-copied the files and now it starts up OK, although it just froze up on me after a minute of play. Sigh.

The filenames are correct.

Can anyone else give feedback on whether it worked for them or not, and whether that's PC or Mac?

I just fixed an issue with the python script. It was downloading all files to "WalkingDead102" instead of the individual folders. Sorry about that.

Sadly i don't have a Mac, so i can't test it myself. There's a slight chance, that some of the files were corrupted during download. Can you post the MD5 checksums of your files?
