Unhappy Somethings are scarier than Zombies the tale of Copy Protected saves and YLOD.

Sigh. It seems my journey is over good friends. My Ps3 slim decided it was a fine time to Yellow Light of Death on me, she was valiant and held out as long as she could.

I managed to get her to power back on for a while, maybe 4 minutes intervals, now it's completely shot. However in the few instances she managed to stay on I was dismayed to see that my Walking Dead save file was copy right protected. So I couldn't quickly copy it to an USB stick or external while it managed to be stable.

Good grief Sony why would you do something like this?!

That is four episodes of individually chosen dialogue and choices that I made at "that" time that has been lost. I was there from day one with the Season pass, months down the drain. I feel like someone punched me in the spleen...

Of course I can get another Ps3 and re-download the game, but....it won't be the same. Sigh.

Oh SHIT. Isn't the slim version the ultra-new model? And no mistreatment from your side?

It's not the Super Duper New Slims that were just released with the Uncharted bundle. It is the "older" slim model, my original Phat suffered YLOD as well. Now it's happening to this model.

At this point there are only 2 options available to you if you want your saves back.

1) If the console remains stable long enough, sign up to PS+ (you may be able to do this online). This will give you Cloud Storage. Then you force save TWD save file to the Cloud in your settings. You can then access that save from anywhere on any console.

2) Take your console to a non Sony authorised repairer. They will repair your console, whereas Sony will send you a refurb which reformats the HDD as a part of the encryption. Repairing though, keeps your consoles encryption intact, this allows you to either:
a, back up,or
b, data transfer everything to a new console.

Whilst a backup doesn't transfer some copy protected info, data transfer transfers EVERYTHING to a new console.

If you have any further queries, just ask.

ask your self why two consoles both had the same fault..

do you play for several hours ?

do you leave your console on 'in standby' ?

do you have a dirty room ?

do you use a surge protector on the power outlet ?

do you abuse the console ?

was it second hand ?

Man, it really sucks, i hate when all my progress is lost.

Though in my opinion, i barely have any problems with replaying the game, mostly because the locations aren't too repetitive, you keep arriving somewhere new, so it's mostly pretty enjoyable to replay the game.

Still mate, sorry for your loss.

Haha man, if i lost my progress on all the Spyro games..mumble mumble..

(1) Yes I play extensively, some epic Marathon sessions.

(2) The first Ps3 phat had a power switch so no. My slim was always in "standby"

(3) Both Ps3s are/were kept in the front house entertainment center and it is clean well ventilated.

(4) Yes to the surge protector.

(5) It was never dropped, bumped or scraped.

(6) Both were brand new.

YLOD is not caused by any of those factors. Its apparently the lead free solder used and cheap thermal paste. Ps3s are made to break with the cheap materials.

does the drm lift if you are online ?

by the way about that lead free solder / thermal paste

the lead free solder will crack/break loose contact from over heating and the thermal paste will be loosing it's heat transfer ability to the heat sink and thats caused by too much use or as you put it your marathon sessions.

so maybe try not to use as much on your third ? also can't be good for your health either

My Playstation just got the YLOD of death too (for the second time). It is an original, backwards compatible one from launch.

I'm not worried. I finished TWD up to the end of episode 4 and have my main saves on there, and I was also playing Resident Evil 6 (at the end of Jake's campaign) when it happened. I took it in for repair, there is a great place near my house that repairs them for 60$. They repaired it 2 years ago and I had no problems up until now.

I will be getting it back either today or tomorrow, and then finishing RE6, and started ACIII while I wait for Ep5.

NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO DON'T SEND IT TO SONY! Fix it yourself or take it into a local repair shop.

Worst comes to worse you can just randomly generate decisions for ep 5 over and over until you get what you are happy with.

It's funny how technology of these days is made of cheap ass materials and stop working properly after 2 years!! I still have my ps1 and 2 and they work better than my new computer...
It seems like people can invent new shit into everything but execute it poorly. Mine ps3 slim (older) works still great... got it as xmas present last year... We shall see if it gets the YLOD
Sometimes I feel that I would like to go back in the simpler times like 90's... Fuck these modern piece of shit machines lol

My understanding of the lead free solder is because the consoles are classed 'toys' lead solder is not allowed. Personally, I think if a child can get lead poisoning from inside a sealed console, lead poisoning the least of the child's problems!
