Default Steam Keys.

I just want to know why TTG doesn't give steam keys with the purchases on their website? Surely the bandwidth they save would make up for whatever it costs to generate a steam key.

Probably because the game was available via Telltale Games directly first and Steam got a license later.
And I'm not sure about this, but I think Telltale was selling their games via their website before Steam got really popular.
And not everyone has a Steam account.

Yeah okay fair enough, but they could try and get more up to date. Although I think if you don't have a steam account you should probably get one, some might not agree with me. So what I think is they could give you a choice between a steam key or a download link on their site. Or just give both, but yeah I know that would probably be exploited to death. I like it way more to buy the games on here, because then Steam doesn't take a cut from the sale and TTG gets more of the money I want to give them. But it really doesn't cost them a cent to generate a steam key and give it to someone who bought it.

No, that's true.
I have no idea how big the percentage is that Steam gets when selling Telltale games, but I'd still rather buy the game from a developer itself, so I know they're getting the full amount and support.
I was pretty late with getting a Steam account. I only got one when they started selling Mac and Steamplay games. It opened up a whole new world of games though. I love the fact that they sell a lot of indie games. I'm still a big fan of point and click adventures and Steam is a great place of finding this dying breed of games.

Yes, but this is essentially what I'm saying. Steam only takes cuts from sales made in their own store, not from generated keys. This is why developers can include steam keys with retail games. When a developer releases a game on steam, Valve sends them a key generator. Then Telltale gets all the money and saves on bandwitdh. (urgh english.)

EDIT: Oops I though your response said 'no, that's not true'. I'm retarded, sorry.

or The Walking Dead...

The reason is here you also get a "free of charge" DVD with your purchase. If they make one.
Also what would stop you from selling those keys or giving them to your friends? You still got the version from here no matter what you do with your Steam key.
And don't say that this would not happen. It already has. Because people are scumbags.

Well... I think that's a service of yesteryear.

Poker Night provided Steam keys because it was a partnership with Valve and unlocking TF2 hats was a big part of the appeal for a lot of people.

Pre-orders of Devil's Playhouse got a Steam key because there were complaints about the Devil's Playhouse pre-order items not being given out to Telltale pre-orders, and they decided the easiest way to grant the hats to Telltale store pre-orders was to give pre-order codes for the season with a Telltale pre-order.

Both of these are situation-specific special cases that exist entirely due to the way Valve handles the doling out of TF2 hats.

But, they could do with the discs what alot of devs do with retail. Link it to the steam key.

Games in retail that come with Steam keys are Steamworks games. Which means you can only play them on Steam. It's not a bonus, it's the only way to play it. TTG's games on their site are not Steamworks games. They connect to their own servers. In the case of their disc releases, they are DRM free. They could offer a Steam key as well, but that's not the same thing as other retail games with Steam keys and would be like giving away two copies of the game. Not every game dev likes to do that.

No they cannot. They are a small indie studio.
There are retail discs but those are published by someone else.

Limbo and The Binding Of Isaac both have optional Steam keys in their retail version. Then again the retail edition costs more than twice what the game does on Steam.
