Default Garage Games Crowd Sourcing to port torque 3d to linux

Torque 3D is now free and open source Mit license GPL v3 compatible and their crowd sourcing for torque 3D to be ported to linux http://www.indiegogo.com/torque3d-for-linux .It seems like a stronger engine than what telltale are using. If telltale uses this engine we could have cross plaftform games aka linux .

What does this mean for the future of indie and low budget game studios?

Telltale's engine is as strong as they want it to be, as the Telltale Tool is very versatile and Telltale can add new functionality to it as they go on, and they have (take a look at the really early games like The Great Cow Race or 3 Dimensions of Murder).

They don't create middle of the mill graphics because the engine can't handle it, they do so to support as many platforms as possible (such as the iPad and cheap e-Machines computers like mine). Besides, artistic design always trumps graphic prowess, and The Walking Dead really seems to have have hit the sweet spot in that area.

Also, Telltale's engine is already cross-platform (they support Windows, Macintosh, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and iOS). Just because the Torque platform has support for Linux, doesn't automatically mean that games made for it will be ready to ship on all platforms supported by the engine. You still have to hire beta-testers to make sure that everything works right on the new platform, and if things don't (which is almost inevitably the case), you need coders to fix the bugs on each platform. Telltale's already having teething issues in that area with The Walking Dead. IMO they shouldn't be adding new platform support to their engine until they manage to sort those issues out.

It means less frustration. I'm a developer myself (though not in games *sad face*), and let's face it: Windows has a lot of bloat and is horrible for development. It means not having to develop on the OS version of a gaming console.
