Default Monkey Island vs Space Quest

Which do you feel is the funniest series? Both series have striking similarities with both featuring mostly unintelligent bumbling protagonists (with Threepwood being slightly smarter). Both are comedic adventure game series. The main characters in both usually have blond hair, but have had brown hair before. Both series have the word revenge in their second installments (LeChucks revenge and Vohauls Revenge). But which series do you feel is the funniest?

They are both great, but Monkey Island had the most magical atmosphere, the better characters, and overall I'm just a bigger fan of it. I can play MI over and over again, but I have never been able to get myself to finish a Space Quest game.

Gah! Don't do this to me! I can't choose! Space Quest IV and Monkey Island 2 both hold equal standing as my two all-time favorite adventure games!

Space Quest was such a huge part of my childhood, and I'm a huge fan of the sci-fi comedy genre in general... But then I've probably replayed the Monkey Island games more often in recent years... The Space Quest games probably had more jokes per line of code, but the jokes in Monkey Island are arguably more memorable and quotable... Space Quest had Gary Owens... but Monkey Island had Dominic Armato...

I can't do it!

Monkey Island has definately held up better over the years. Father time REALLY took a bat to the AGI games.

The Monkey Island series is definitely better over all. I didn't really get into Space Quest after the second game and some of the later titles were just awful. Plus, I don't think Wilco stands a chance against Threepwood as a main character!

Space Quest had really uh... odd humor. Maybe it's because I'm a girl, but I found the MI humor much funnier then SQ. I didn't actually make it through all the SQ games. I loved the premise of SQ, but MI series are definitely better put together games... plus you didn't die every five seconds.

Space Quest 6 was the only Space Quest game I liked.

I am not going to vote for this, for I haven't play enough SQ to make a judgement. But I have to agree the AGI aged less graciously than Scumm.

This is kind of a bad place to put this. People on these forums are much more likely to be Monkey Island fans, not Space Quest ones. People will vote for Monkey Island who have never played Space Quest.

Myself... I prefer Space Quest, but only slightly. I don't enjoy the AGI adventures nearly as much as the later point-and-click ones. Space Quest 6 was genius!

Space Quest 6 was also the only one I ever beat... I kept dying in the other ones... Also, they seemed a bit preoccupied with jock straps...

Anyone notice how the bad guy in SQ6 was the same voice as Valinece in KQ7?

I will refrain from voting because I foresee one of two possible outcomes.

A) Scott Murphy beats me up in a dark alley.
B) Ron Gilbert beats me up in a dark alley.

Regardless, I enjoyed both series' fairly equally.

What I really disliked in SQ and most other Sierra adventure games is how they just randomly deside to kill you. I never bothered finishing most of them due to that fact and the really stupid puzzles. But who knows, maybe it's time to launch my Dosbox.

I probably should have stipulated that you should have played at least a few games from both series before voting in the poll . I always enjoyed the deaths in Space Quest as they were usually neat animations and were quite humorous. Since this is Tell Tale's forums it is logical to conclude that it will be inherently skewed toward monkey island fans, but it is still nice to see that Space Quest got some votes.

If comedy is the only criteria, Space Quest wins hands-down. The narrator in SQ is unbelievably funny and Roger is a perfectly played bumbling hero who really, I think, laid the foundation for Guybrush.

Now we could argue about which games were better designed or whether you found death frustrating or whatever. But in terms of laughs, I always found MI more chuckle-worthy than roll-on-the-floor funny like SQ.

But... SQ6 was horrible compared to all the other ones

It's true. If we go by humor alone, Space Quest will win hands-down. It's just the OTHER aspects that make Monkey Island VS Space Quest a somewhat difficult proposal.

I'm leaning towards Space Quest, but Monkey Island is so DIFFERENT and EPIC that it's really hard to just flat-out say Space Quest.

I freaking LOVE Space Quest. Though I'm afraid that the threads about it here will give Telltale ideas. As much as I love them, their policy would not make a good Space Quest game. Just like LucasArts made good adventures, but their(then)new policy did not make a good Maniac Mansion game.

Default Degree of humor

Honestly, whether you prefer SQ or MI depends on your tastes in humor. Space Quest is much more about the slapstick side of comedy while Monkey Island is a more towards subtle jokes and lengthy jibes (like the insults). SQ revels in what many consider the low forms of comedy while MI is a bit more difficult to define beyond the whole bumbling hero archetype both series share.

I wouldn't say that SQ's humour is more low brow than MI, but I would say it is definitely more pop culture heavy than MI. A lot of SQ's jokes revolve around the scifi genre and you have to be somewhat of a scifi fan to appreciate most of it. I would also say that SQ's humour tends more toward absurdity and satire than MI does.
