Official Sam & Max: The Mole, the Mob, and the Meatball Walkthrough

In the third installment of the season, the commissioner calls with an assignment to go after the Toy Mafia. If you'll remember back to Situation: Comedy, the Toy Mafia had a hand in Myra Stump's hypnotic episode by way of their gift of one Hypno-Bear. The Commissioner embedded a mole in an attempt to infiltrate the mobsters a few weeks back, but the agent has not been heard from in awhile; you must locate him! The secret catch phrase you will use to identify him will be "Does the carpet match the drapes?" Feel free to use that one with anyone else you talk to, though.

Around Town

Have a look around the office, noting that Jimmy has taken up a rather dishonorable profession, that of professional fence.

Pick up the Ace of Spades.

The TV will show a rerun of Midtown Cowboys, but nothing that's very pertinent to this case. Head out to the street and pop in to the usual locations. Talk to Sybil; she has become a professional trial witness, but there's nothing useful to do here, at least for now.

Head over to Bosco's Inconvenience, and you will see that he's wearing yet another disguise. In this episode, he's a "Cowardly French Anarchist" (his words). He says the Toy Mafia has it in for him, hence the need to change from his previous British disguise. He's expecting them to deliver something to his store, but he doesn't know what it will be or when it will arrive. Tell him you want to buy something, and then ask him what he has to offer. His offering this time around is a miniature listening device, available for a mere 10 million dollars. It looks like we'll have to figure out a way to get that money a little further along in the game. Let's head over to the Mafia hideout for now: "Ted-E Bear's Mafia-Free Playland and Casino".

Family-Style Infiltration

Once you arrive at the casino, you're greeted by Lovey Bear, a suspicious character who gives you some tokens to use at the Casino. Take a look at the Meatball sandwich, and then have a crack at the "Whack Da Ratz" arcade game. The goal is to hit 20 or more rats who are squealing. Just focus on shooting the orange ones, ignoring the yellow ones who have their mouths shut. Once you win that game, you'll get a Ted E. Bear refrigerator magnet.

Why not try a hand of poker with Leonard Steakcharmer, the mustachioed card shark at the table next to the animatronic singing bear heads? His style of play is Indian Poker, a variant wherein you only know what your opponent's card is, and not your own. Then you bet if you think you have the higher card. Playing against Leonard will prove fruitless, however, because he seems to have some unclear advantage, and will always win. Head back towards the door, and have a look at the clown nose above the exit. Who's that staring back in the reflection? Mr. Steakcharmer's edge has been revealed, but how do you counteract that? Go into your inventory and grab that Ace of Spades, and toss it up on the nose. Now play Leonard again. He'll be tricked by the fake reflection, and you'll win ten million tokens.

Return to Bosco's, and trade the tokens for the listening device, which turns out to be a bug in the more literal sense. Feel free to use it on just about everyone for some funny hidden dialogue lines.

Head back to the casino, and try to get into the restricted area over by the blue-headed bear guard. This is the entrance to the Toy Mafia's lair. You'll need to speak the password to get in, but you won't get far with guessing.

Instead, use the bug on the guard standing by the sealed entrance. Go over and use a token on the one-armed bandit, and you'll win! However, there's no prize, unfortunately. This will cause the red-headed pit boss, Chuckles, to emerge from behind the door, and then re-enter the lair. The guard will demand the password from him, and you can then go retrieve it from the bug. Speak the password to the guard, and you'll gain access.

Chuckles will ask you if you're interested in joining the Toy Mafia. Why not? Say yes, and you will be tasked with three chores to make sure you're Toy Mafia material. You must place a Teddy Bear on the display at Bosco's, "whack" Sybil, and chase down a stolen meatball sandwich that bears great sentimental value to the Mafia.

The Three Trials Mob…Things

Let's start over at Bosco's. With his BTADS-2 anti-delivery system and his watchful eye, it will be tough to place this toy on the display. Talk to Bosco and tell him that there's a Toy Mafia member outside. Since the dealer has mysteriously showed up to loiter outside his store, Bosco will become very distracted by his presence. Next, you must disable the BTADS system. Trying to place the item will result in it getting sucked up and spit back out on the street. Grab the magnet you won from Whack Da Ratz, and use it on the anti-delivery camera. The alarm will sound, but the vacuum will suck the camera up along with the magnet, leaving you free to place the Teddy Bear on display.

Next, it's time to take care of Sybil. Sam won't really be willing to kill Sybil, thankfully, but that means we will have to work around the watchful eyes of the Toy Mafia, who are expecting a gruesome scene to unfold on their monitors. Go in and talk to Sybil, and you'll see she's a bit on edge, and drinking from an empty coffee cup.

Grab the cup once you're done talking to her, and head back to Bosco's. Use the cup on the faithful condiments rack, and you'll have a large cup of ketchup to help stage Sybil's death. Return the cup to Sybil, and then shoot it with your gun. The Mafiosi will be convinced, and that's two of three tasks complete.

Head back to your office, where you know that a certain fence has been known to do business in stolen goods. You'll encounter Leonard Steakcharmer and Jimmy Two-teeth in negotiations, and Sam will interrupt them. Leonard holds a gun to the Freelance Police!

Sam tries fruitlessly to diffuse the situation, but selecting Max's sole dialogue option "Is that a cap gun" will achieve the desired result. Once Max grabs, pummels, and ties up Mr. Steakcharmer, it's time to lay on the hurt by insulting his mother. Sam only knows the setups, and Max only knows the punch-lines. You'll have to match them up to solve this puzzle.

Sam: "Yo Mama's so fat…"

Max: "She's got more folds than an accordion!"

Sam: "Yo Mama's so vulgar…"

Max: "She'd make a longshoreman blush!"

Sam: "Yo Mama's so perky…"

Max: "The only time she's low is at a limbo contest!"

Sam: "Yo Mama's so radiant…"

Max: "If she fell in nuclear waste, no one would notice!'

Sam: "Yo Mama's so punctual…"

Max: "She showed up early for her own funeral."

This should be enough to get Leonard to suffer an emotional breakdown, and he'll hand over the bandit arm which will unlock the sandwich back at the casino. Return there at once and use the arm on the slot machine.

Once the sandwich is recovered, the Toy Mafia will begin an initiation ceremony, wherein you'll realize that Ted E. Bear is none other than the mole you were sent in to spring from the clutches of the mob. He's switched sides, and now the mobsters are after you! To the DeSoto!

Take down the Bear…erm, Mole. Bear-mole.

In the driving game that ensues, you're going to need to shoot down the big Emetics banner that hangs over the narrow bridge area. This will take out the mafia car, and you're safe to return to confront Ted E. Bear / Harry the Mole.

Enter the door that says "Do not Enter", and you'll find yourself in a secret Hypno-Bear factory. Ted / Harry will try to hypnotize you with it, but neither you nor Max is fazed by it, due to the protections you put in place back in Culture Shock and Situation: Comedy, and also because Max is just cool like that. However, you must act the part, and the Mole-bear commands you to shoot Max. Thankfully, we've still got Leonard's cap gun, so use it on Max. Harry is satisfied, but now Max has to play dead while you work to disable the factory, so get going. Did you see when Max fell on the lever and was sucked into the machinery, only to raise the pressure/temperature once he got to the main toy assembly entrance? There's a clue or three in that.

First, though, grab the screwdriver on the desk by the door, and use it on the one-armed-bandit. You'll dislodge its voice box, which will definitely come in handy. Throw the voice box into the hopper filled with Hypno Bear voice boxes, and it will be lifted and inserted into one of the Bears. Pick the bear up from the floor, and use it on Harry.

He'll be hypnotized to think he's on fire, and will run over to the prop fire extinguisher.

Go and throw the lever that Max fell upon earlier, and he'll be sucked up into the works. Giving Max and Sam just enough time to escape before the toy factory explodes.
