The official Sam & Max: Night of the Raving Dead walkthrough! NOTE: This is a full walkthrough for the game. The text and graphics are chock full of puzzle solutions and spoilers. If you haven't played the game yet and don't want stuff to be given away, don't read this! Check out the spoiler free screenshots and videos instead.
This episode starts out with an extended cutscene to set the mood. Zombies, swarming from someplace called The Zombie Factory, are on the attack, and one of them has stolen Jesse James' hand from Sam & Max's office. This time, it's personal. When the cutscene ends, take a look around the office to see what's changed since last time. Then go out to the street to confront that hand-stealing zombie! Click on the zombie in front of Sam & Max's office. He sure is hard to understand. Actually, all of these zombies are pretty inarticulate. Maybe someone else can tell you what's going on? Bosco's is locked up tight, so keep walking until you get to Sybil's, which is reopened now that she and Abe Lincoln's giant stone head have broken up.
One look around Sybil's office will tell you that she isn't taking the break-up all that well. Talk to Sybil, and she'll tell you that she's trying to find her soulmate by interviewing new potential suitors, starting with everyone's favorite Mafioso-turned-moon ranger, Harry Moleman. There's a gadget on her desk called a Soul Mater that "rips souls from across the plains to reunite them with corruptible mortal vessels." Sounds interesting -- especially in light of the recent zombie influx -- but Sybil has her heart set on finding a suitor before she'll try to use it. Sybil doesn't know where the Zombie Factory is, so it's time to seek out someone who does.
Keep walking right and go into Stinky's Diner. A dejected Abe Lincoln is here, and he's driving Stinky crazy. There's an old-style sunlamp next to the jukebox. Ask Stinky why she has it, then ask if you can take it. After she says yes, click on the sunlamp to take the bulb. You can talk some more with Abe and Stinky if you want, but neither of them know where the Zombie Factory, so when you're tired of chit-chat, it's time to move on. Go back outside and walk right until you reach the PimpLeCar body shop. Click on the COPS to talk to them. All they want to talk about is Stuttgart On-Line (SOL), their new internet venture. Once the COPS mention Stuttgart, you will be able to visit the Zombie Factory in Stuttgart by clicking on your DeSoto. Or you can hang out and play the COPS newest driving game challenge to get a super antenna for your car. Just keep pestering them about car upgrades until they agree to give you the antenna in return for marketing assistance. (NOTE: You'll need to play the game and get the antenna eventually, but you can come back to it later if you'd rather go to Stuttgart right away.)
This game plays like the old arcade game, Paperboy. Sam is driving, and Max has the SOL discs. You can move the car with either the cursor or the arrow keys on your keyboard. To make Max throw an SOL disc, right-click. The goal is to hit 10 zombies with SOL discs before the time limit runs out.You're going to deliver free SOL install discs to suburban zombies, whether they're in the market for a new internet solution or not! Once you win the antenna, you will be taken back to the street automatically. You can also exit the driving challenge and return to the street at any time by clicking the building icon in the lower right corner of the screen. Have fun storming the castle!
It's time to hit the Zombie Factory. Click on the DeSoto and select "Let's go to Stuttgart" from the options. You arrive at a dark, gloomy castle with a gaggle of zombies lined up in front of the door. As with the zombies on the street, talking to them doesn't do much good. Click on the door to enter the castle. The door slowly opens to reveal... Agent Superball, bouncer extraordinaire! Superball won't let you in because the Zombie Factory is at capacity. He tells you to wait in line behind the zombies, but there's got to be some way to force yourselves in. When you're done talking to Superball, take a look around the castle grounds for something that may prove useful. There's an ashtray next to the door. Click it, and Sam will find a pack of clove cigarettes... garlic clove cigarettes, that is.
Follow the path to the right, and you'll find a graveyard with an open grave. Click on the open grave to retrieve a brain. Zombies love brains! Go back to the gaggle of zombies and try giving them the brain. Yep, they love brains all right -- so much that they're willing to eat Sam to get it from him! Just behind the zombies, there is a stone gargoyle holding an offering dish. It's set into the wall too high for the zombies to reach -- the perfect spot to put that brain! Use the brain on the gargoyle to make Sam throw it up there. The Zombies will come over and start trying to reach it, which clears the path to the door for Sam & Max! Before he'll let you in, Superball will make you leave the garlic clove cigarettes behind. Apparently they -- along with holy water -- are not allowed inside the Zombie Factory. Put the cigarettes back in the ashtray where you found them. Maybe you can find a use for them later. Party time! As it turns out, the Zombie Factory is not a factory that makes zombies, but a rave club run by an emo vampire named Jurgen. He recognizes Sam & Max from their past appearance on the sitcom Midtown Cowboys, which is a huge hit here in Stuttgart. Click on Jurgen to talk to him. He'll tell you that you can't destroy him without destroying the source of his power – his style. Ask about his power and Jurgen will tell you that the zombies love him because of his rhymes, his dance moves, and the fact that he always stays on top of the latest trends. To destroy this poser, Sam & Max are going to have to make him look like a fool in front of the zombies. Keep talking to Jurgen for some clues about how to defeat him. First, ask Jurgen about Midtown Cowboys, and he'll tell you it's the most popular program around. Maybe you can somehow use Midtown Cowboys to influence Jurgen? (After you have this conversation, a new location will be available the next time you click on the DeSoto: the TV studio!) Next, ask Jurgen about his dancing. He'll say that the Zombies love the way he moves. He seems pretty proud of himself, but maybe you can trip him up somehow?
Finally, tell Jurgen that he's not all that, and he'll challenge you to a rhyming duel. It's time to prove to the zombies that you can be just as melancholy and miserable as Jurgen! NOTE: If you don't want to figure it out yourself, the solutions to the rhyming duel are below. But the rest of the answers are pretty funny! Sam: Count Cryptwind Deathgrasp. Max: Baron Bat-Anguish von Nightmare. Max: We'll knock you out deader than Bela Lugosi! Sam: Our world is endless torment and sorrow. Max: 'Cause all creation ends in death and decay. The zombies love it! Jurgen's a little pissed, but sucking some blood out of Max's head puts him in a better mood. Jurgen's rhyme is a cheap knock-off of Sam & Max's, but the zombies still like him better. You'll have to find another way to beat Jurgen at this game.
Let's take a closer look around the Zombie Factory. Just behind where Jurgen's dancing is a fireplace. To the right of the fireplace is a table with a typewriter ribbon on it. You can take the typewriter ribbon if you want. From here, walk across the dance floor to the counter with water bottles and other trinkets on it. (It's to the left of the DJ booth and flashing Zombie Factory sign.) Click on the counter to take a bottle of water. Next, check out the DJ booth. Try out some of the buttons between the turntables. Each one plays a different word over the music. You can also click on the buttons at the bottom of the screen to change the beat of the music... and the direction of the spotlight. Press the fourth button to the right, so the spotlight moves over Jurgen as part of its path. Walk right, past the DJ booth, to the coffin and bookshelf. The bookcase next to the coffin / passageway also has a poem on it, but it's been worn down so Sam can't read it. The sign on the coffin is legible, though: If the last word in each line seems familiar, it's because you just heard them when you were messing around at the DJ booth. Go back to the turntable and click the buttons that correspond with these words: death; sepulcher; embrace; letters. (These buttons are random and change each time you play the episode, so you'll have to figure out which is which on your own!)
When you push the buttons in the correct order, the coffin door will open. Click on the open coffin to enter a secret passageway. You'll end up on the balcony above where Jurgen is dancing, right next to the spotlight. Take the bulb from Stinky's sunlamp out of your inventory and click it on the spotlight to switch the bulbs. Since you changed the path of the spotlight to sweep over Jurgen, he will be burned by the sunlamp. This does not make him look cool in front of his zombies! You're not quite done defeating Jurgen, but you've done all you can do at the Zombie Factory for now. Click on the exit door to go back outside. Click on the DeSoto and choose to go to the TV studio (this option will only appear after you talk to Jurgen about Midtown Cowboys).
Tonight, on a very special episode of Midtown Cowboys... When you arrive at the TV studio, taping for "A Very Special Episode of Midtown Cowboys" is already in progress. Sam & Max are the stars of this show, and Bessie (the cow) and Philo Pennyworth a.k.a. Mr. Featherly (the chicken) are the costars. Click on Mr. Featherly to find out what he's been up to. Then go over to the Director. She'll tell you that Midtown Cowboys is a surprise hit in Germany. Ask her what the episode is about, and you'll learn that it's an intervention episode. As usual, the Director more excited about product placement opportunities than artistic integrity. Select "Let's film" and watch the drama unfold! In the scene, Mr. Featherly is addicted to Old Gutsmack brand malt liquor. As a result, Old Gutsmack has become super popular in Germany. When the scene is over, click on the exit door (on the left, next to the cinderblock bookshelf) and choose to go back to Stuttgart. Let's find out what Jurgen thought of the show! When you enter the Zombie Factory this time, you'll see Jurgen holding a bottle of Old Gutsmack brand malt liquor -- the same brand you just promoted on Midtown Cowboys -- and bragging about how much he likes it. It turns out that Jurgen's a sheep when it comes to adopting trends he saw on TV. How could Sam & Max use this to their advantage?
On your way out of the Zombie Factory, pick up the garlic clove cigarettes from the ashtray. Return to the TV studio. It's time to film an alternate version of the Midtown Cowboys scene. First, use the pack of clove cigarettes on Mr. Featherly's bag, and Sam will swap them with the malt liquor. Then tell the Director you're ready to film again. This time, the product placement will be for the garlic clove cigarettes. Head back to Stuttgart to find Jurgen smoking the same brand, and coughing up a storm! The zombie posse is getting pretty annoyed with "Master" Jurgen. We're getting close; one more blunder and the vampire will completely lose his cool. The clove cigarettes were one of two items banned from the Zombie Factory. The other banned item is holy water. You've seen some holy water in this game already. Do you remember where?
Mmm... tastes like righteousness Go to the DeSoto and choose "Let's go home." Go into Sam & Max's office and look at the orange bowl next to the window, where "High Priest Max" was bathing at the beginning of the episode. This bowl is filled with holy water. Take the water bottle from your inventory and fill it with holy water. Then click the bottle on Max. After drinking the holy water, a halo appears over Max's head. This will stay until the effects of the holy water wear off. Go back to Stuttgart. Before entering the castle, have Max drink some holy water. The halo will appear over his head. The effects don't last very long, but you're not allowed to bring the bottle in with you, so if you're going to use the holy water against Jurgen, you'll have to move fast. You need Jurgen to drink Max's blood while there's still holy water coursing through the rabbity-thing's veins! Drop the water bottle into the ashtray so Superball doesn't bust you, then go straight inside and challenge Jurgen to another rhyming duel. If you've already won the duel, you can skip Sam & Max's lines and go straight to Jurgen's (otherwise, see above for the solution). Before Jurgen takes his turn, he'll take a few sips of Max's blood, and this time it definitely doesn't agree with him. That is the very last of the straws! Jurgen runs into the fireplacem which doubles as an elevator up to his secret lair. Follow him in, and watch the fireworks. You Are Dead Oops. That's the end of the flashback, and Sam & Max have been turned into zombies! So what do we do now? A conversation with Zombie Abe Lincoln would be a good start. This isn't the same marble Abe who's moping in Stinky's diner, but the actual Abe Lincoln, who recently climbed out of a grave himself. Talk to him a bit, and you'll learn that the last thing he remembers was taking in a play with his wife, Mary Todd. End the conversation and walk over to where the three zombies were lined up earlier. There's only one left, but amazingly, Sam & Max can now understand what he's saying! When you're done talking to the zombie, click on Superball. It turns out that now that Sam & Max are zombies, only other zombies can understand what they're saying. Bummer. You can keep trying to talk to him, but you won't get anywhere. End the conversation and click on the door to reenter the Zombie Factory. Zombie Abe Lincoln will creep in after you.
Walk over to the dance floor to chat up the other zombies. Before you have the chance, Flint Paper will come smashing through the window. He and Zombie Abe Lincoln get into it, and Flint ends up victorious... and with Lincoln's brain, to boot! Click on Flint. When he realizes you're zombies, he'll try to kill you. This isn't going to work. You need to find a way to take Flint out without him seeing you. Enter the fireplace and take the elevator back into Jurgen's lair. Here you'll encounter your souls, caged up and not all that excited to see you. Your souls have no interest in reuniting with your bodies (you didn't think it would be that easy, did you?!), so you'll have to find a way to force the reunion. Until then, let's take a good look around.
Did somebody say... birthday?! Click on the monster. Apparently Jurgen was building himself a playmate, but he's not quite done. Looks like a job for the Freelance Police! Just to the right of the monster, you'll see a big switch. Flip the switch, and the monster will come to life...
When the mariachi is gone, talk to the monster. He's a sensitive guy, and he's pretty attached to Master Jurgen. Ask him what the problem is, and he'll tell you he's lonely. Also he's feeling incomplete, because he's missing a few body parts. Take a look at the operating table next to the monster to see the parts that remain. You can add any of these parts to the monster's arm, chest, or head. (It's pointless right now, but it's fun!) When you're done messing with the monster, walk right to the alchemy machine. The batteries are dead... great. Take the wire cutters from the floor beside the alchemy machine. Go over to Jurgen's coffin. Your souls are hanging out here, and they want nothing to do with you. There's an alchemy book on the table next to the coffin, with instructions for turning chocolate to gold. Interesting, but not useful just yet.
Walk left, past the entrance, to the collection of stakes hanging on the wall. Click on the trophy case to take a stake. Then look at the portrait above the trophy case. It's a painting of Jurgen in the club, posing in front of a familiar-looking bookcase. This is the bookcase with the worn-out poem hanging above it. In the portrait, you can just make out the last word of each sentence: abyss; razors; pain; parents. Maybe these words will behave the same way as in the other poem... Click on the elevator door to go back to the main room of the club. Flint is still here, shooting like there's no tomorrow. Walk past him to the DJ booth. Push the buttons that correspond with the words abyss, razors, pain, and parents. The bookcase next to the coffin passageway will open. Click on it to enter the passage, and you'll come out right behind Flint. He's so scared by your zombie approach, he passes out cold. While Max is busy sucking Flint's forehead, Sam will grab Lincoln's brain from the floor and pocket it. Meanwhile, across town... Exit the Zombie Factory, click on the DeSoto, and select "Let's go back home." You'll arrive on the street just in time to see Jesse James' hand escape from its zombie captor and scamper into Stinky's. Follow the rogue hand into the diner. Stinky is tied up behind the counter, held hostage by the disembodied hand. Whip out your gun -- it's time for a showdown!
This puzzle depends on where Sam is standing when you shoot the gun. If you stand to the right of the hand and shoot, each shot will send the hand closer to Stinky. If you stand to the left of the hand, each shot will send the hand closer to the gooey molasses tar cake. And if you click on Stinky, she'll yell for help, and the hand will aim at her and move back one space from the recoil. Stand to the left and keep shooting until the hand is as close to the tar cake as it will go. Then click on Stinky twice to edge the hand closer to the tar cake. Finally, shoot the hand again, and it will splat straight into the tar cake, and get stuck there! You can now take the hand and stuff it in your pocket. Now that all is calm at Stinky's (well, she's still tied up, but who cares about that), go to Sybil's. As you come in, she'll fill you in on the suitor situation. She's narrowed it down to two guys: Harry Moleman and Mr. Featherly. Let's face it, neither is a great catch. Hmm... remember that lonely monster you met back at Jurgen's? Maybe he's the right guy for Sybil! She's tolerant of zombies, so she shouldn't have any problem with monsters.
Exit Sybil's and click on the DeSoto to return to Stuttgart. Go back to Jurgen's lair and talk to the monster. Tell him you have the perfect bride for him. He's intrigued. Select "Let's go meet Sybil," and the monster will hop in the car with you. Can we make a love connection? Sybil is screening three eligible bachelors to weed out the losers and land on the perfect candidate to be her boyfriend. The three contenders are the sensitive monster, Mr. Featherly, and Harry Moleman... who clearly has something against zombies. Sybil doesn't seem amused by his apprehension about Sam & Max. To screen the contestants, Sybil has three questions to ask. Click on her desk to help her select a question. After Sybil asks each question, the bachelors will give their answers. Initially, she's not impressed by any of them. It's time for Sam & Max to rig this election!
#1 -- My last boyfriend was a real jerk. I'm looking for a man who's kind, upstanding, good to everyone, and never cruel. Prove to me you've got a heart of gold. #2 -- I'm looking for a guy who's good with his hands, unlike his last boyfriend. How would you show me you're good with your hands? #3 -- The only thing I liked about my last boyfriend was that he had a way with words. He always knew the right thing to say. What would you say to me in a romantic moment? While Harry Moleman is considering his answer to question number 3, click the chocolate heart on the table next to him. Zombie-hater that he is, Harry freaks out, and Sybil is not amused. She sends him packing, but no sooner has he left, than Superball has taken Harry's place on the couch. That agent sure moves fast! Now that Harry's gone, you can pocket the chocolate heart. That "turning chocolate into gold" book back at Jurgen's is calling, but since we're here, let's get through as much of Sybil's screening test as we can.
Use Lincoln's brain and Jesse James' hand on the monster. Then click on Sybil's desk to repeat questions #2 and #3. The monster sure does seem to be winning Sybil over. We just need to turn the chocolate heart into gold, and we'll have this dating game in the bag. Chocolate is a girl's best friend
Go back to Stuttgart. When you exit the car, use the wire cutters from your inventory to remove the big antenna from the DeSoto. You'll need this for the alchemy machine with the dead batteries. Go inside the Zombie Factory and return to Jurgen's lair. The monster is here already (how'd he do that?!) Use the antenna on the alchemy machine and flip the power switch (the same one you used to bring the monster to life) to recharge the batteries. Then use the chocolate heart on the alchemy machine. You'll end up with a heart of gold. Use this on the monster, then click on him to start a conversation and invite him back to Sybil's. Back at Sybil's, click on the desk and choose question #1. With this last sensitive answer, Sybil's ready to make her decision. But wait! In her heart, she knows who her true soulmate is: it's Abe, not the monster. Sybil runs off to reconcile with her true love and the three contestants storm off, leaving Sam & Max alone in the office. Click the soul mater on Sybil's desk to take it.
Souls, meet bodies Go to Jurgen's lair. Once inside, Sam will whip out the soul mater. The souls are reunited. But wait! The souls got mixed up with the bodies! Now Sam is Max and Max is Sam. There's no time to sort it out, because Jurgen's awake! You're now controlling Max (but it's really Sam, in Max's body). Take the wooden stake from your inventory and use it on Jurgen. He knocks it right out of your hand! Okay, so the stake's no good. What else do we have to work with in here?
Flip the switch on Jurgen's soul crusher (the big machine that turned you into zombies earlier). Then, click on the machine's massive teeth to enter the soul crusher. Your souls will be separated from your bodies again, but the soul mater in your inventory pulls them right back. Toss the soul mater to the monster, then repeat the process. This time, Sam & Max's souls will flit over to the monster, and both souls end up inside him! As the monster, walk to the trophy case and grab another stake. Then use the stake on Jurgen. He's too mesmerized by you to fight back, and this time you send the stake right into his heart. To make things worse, during his soliloquy, Jurgen stumbles into his own soul crusher. Seeya, prince of darkness! But wait! Flint Paper must have regained consciousness, because he bursts onto the scene gun blazing, and takes down the monster. Poor guy. He was so misunderstood.
Sam & Max's souls pop out of the monster's corpse and Sam's is reunited with his body. While Max chases his soul around the room, Flint reveals that he's been tracking Bosco -- but Bosco has vanished off the face of the earth! Congratulations! You've completed Sam & Max 203: Night of the Raving Dead. Make sure to stick around through the credits for a little surprise...
